Baby Fig leaves?

  • Jed

I do not have a photo. But my dog ate limbs off of a 1' Black Mission that has a nice root system and is potted in a 1 gallon ceramic pot. I had replanted it because the dog was trying to transplant it on his own. So after I had been reading the ways to cultivate another tree from one tree, I replanted it a few inches deeper to try to start more roots higher up.

My question is about the tiny leaves near the sunny side of the base of the tree. There are leaves that are about a quarter inch or more near the base. They are not the usual weeds in my back yard. Typical weeds to not grow in my hard clay soil. I get sprouts from one of the neighbor's trees that grow new seedlings all over the place. I let them grow a bit then cut and use them for mulch. I cannot tell what kind of leaves. They are growing in pairs but they are the first sets of leaves coming out of the potting soil.

Is it possible that there are leaves sprouting from roots that are growing under my Black Mission tree?

Yes
Re-train or re-locate the dog, LOL

dkirtexas, thanks. I was hoping those fig leaves. I have been working on this dog. I am babysitting a 6 month old puppy. I whipped him with the newspaper ads, to make a lot of noise. But that has not worked out great so I have moved my plants up on a shelf he cannot reach. I also used a doggy gate to keep him out of that area. The BM has take a few weeks to leave out again but it has started.

I did notice that the little stick of a BM likes to dry soil. I am watering it less and it likes that.

I also trimmed some unknown fig branches off the side of a neighbor's fencing. It was growing through the fence and d driving them nuts. I have no idea which cultivar but I did get some of the branches to leaf in a smart pot. I keep it fairly moist but not too moist. I suppose I could use it for a hedge plant if it does not fruit.

I am not sure why the dogs love to eat the lower leaves, ones they can reach. They love those leaves.

2 More Questions:

1) The BM was bitten off below the bud on the main branch. Will my BM main branch always only be 16" tall? Has it been stunted?

2) Are there any secrets to speeding up the growth of a Fig Tree?
