Bagalhouce

My wife's family is from Pico Island in the Azores and I would like to get a Bagalhouce fig since that is where they originate. Any suggestions for how I might obtain a cutting or tree?

Where do you live? Importing might be a hassle.

Just found this.http://www.adrianosfigtrees.com/varieties.html

I live in California.

sbcp,

Hi, The name of your fig seems to be 'Badalhouçe' having the current synonyms : - Bacalar , Passanudo.. may be others
Belongs to the Cachopeiro group which means that in its typical climate of the southern Portugal, ripens two crop , in June and in August/September.. without the need of pollination
It is now a very rare cultivar and may be approaching extinction
Understand it's a good fruit but, sweet and with good flavor . both breba and main crop.
If I am given further information I shall let you know.

Hi,

Mr. Montserrat Pons has that variety in his collection:

Hi Jaime
It would be interesting to find a bit more about this cultivar.
Badalhouce was up to the 16th century , also the Portuguese name of the Spanish town known today as Badajoz the capital of the Estremadura Province.
A Spanish white fig (two crop) from the Province of Andaluzia, known by 'Pezonuda' bears a name close to the Badalhouce synonym - Paçanudo-
May be through your good contacts in Spain we get a bit more light into the true origins/names  of this variety which one good day landed in the Pico Island in the Açores Arquipelago

Francisco

Thanks for the information, Francisco.

I will try to ask my Spanish friends what they know about that variety.

Jaime
