Bagging Barbillone - Minimizing splits, souring & disastrous fruit flies

Bagged close to 900 figs. More to go. Best bag size to use is 4"x6"

I bet that was a lot of work!  Where did you get your bags from?  I just want to be ready just in case I get some fruit on my trees next year.

It seems it would be easier on such a productive branch to use 1 very long, wide bag to cover all the figs. Maybe a cross between a bird net and an organza bag......

I google "organza" bags & a bunch of sellers. Not able to recall name of company in California. Their 3"x4" bag was cheap at US$2.10 per 30 bags. Their 4"x6" was $7+.

The 3"x4" bags would fit all Mt Ethna type figs, Salem Dark, Ginoso, RdB, VdB, I258 & LSU variants like Yellow, Red, Improved Celeste, St Gabriel, Champagne & many other smaller figs. However, in terms of ease in use, the 4"x6" stood out. The 4"x6" can easily bag a large fig like Brunswick, Osborne Prolific etc.

I certainly recommend using them during this time of the season. We had 2 days of Wet weather, cold wet mornings for days & hardly any bagged figs ruptured. The unbagged ones certainly did.

Wow what a productive fig!  Too bad my cutting didn't make it.

Given there are so many figs are BC birds so aggressive that you need to do this?

You may want to look at a grape bird net 1/4" squares that can cover the whole tree to save some time.  Easy to move the net tree to tree as required and the net lasts many years.

Tony, It is great idea and good price, But it takes near 2 months+ for it to arrive here, I might order some for next year.
What color is best choice?

I have some big figs that I want to protect it.
Will organza bag work well to block tiny fruit flies, Bee wasps, birds,  How about Squirrels?  Thanks

Thank you everyone for the suggestions about where I can get the organza bags.

Tony, I will order them from China as you suggested since I am in no rush to get them. There really isn't much to protect this year!

I agree with Tony, I bought many off ebay and if you are not in a rush China is the cheapest route. Just order early because some packages take upwards to 2 months to arrive. The organza bags work for gnats, flies, and somewhat for stinkbugs but not so much for hornets, yellow jackets, and ants.

Beautiful figs, Paully!

Pino would this 1/4 inch netting be a deterrent for hornets as well or are the squares too big?  I have always thought the organza bags are just too much of a PITA and always leaned towards just covering an entire tree with something....but I haven't found anything I'm 100% happy with yet.

I went with the green colour hoping it would help camouflage the fig with the leaves.

I switched to green also. Birds picked the bags off and fly away with it. Or maybe squirrels are doing that. But green bags may help. Had birds peck figs through bags too.

I use green bags now. I have used different colors last year and earlier this year. I think the color may help with birds. But it doesn't seem to make a difference with the squirrels. I swear they look for the bags! And then chew up the bags too! They seem to leave the figs alone until the day after I bag it.

Steve
The hornets would have no problem going through the 1/4" net.  There may be smaller mesh but I haven't seen any smaller.

But I haven't had any issues with hornets bothering my figs.  I guess if you have a super sweet over ripe fig hanging that is damaged then a wasp may decide to eat some but even wasp prefer fruits like pears and grapes.  Different locations seem to have varying pest issues.

Pino - I will send some cuttings.

Thx for the reply Pino. Didn't think it would work but I thought I'd ask. My one productive tree last year was 10 feet away from my household compost bin and hornets where a real problem all last fall. This year I moved my trees out to the other side of my yard and have had no problems.
