Bardacik Fig Seeds

Hi, I have some "Bardacik" fig seeds. 2-3 years ago I ordered some "Mini Purple" Fig seeds, along with it came a gift packet of "Bardacik" Fig seeds. I'm going to plant some and see how it does. I don't expect much advice since its an incredibly foreign variety, I mean, the video's or in turkish or something (LOL)

Turkish figs are like figs anywhere.  They don't reproduce true to variety from seed.  You might eventually get a desirable fig from one fig plant of planting thousands of seeds and it will take years, time, money and effort to reach that goal and still no guarantee you will get a good one.  Are you in for the long haul?  if not, don't waste the effort and get known varieties, cuttings or plants.  :)

Also wouldn't be good anyway? They won't suddenly be a variety that tastes like toilet, right?

Likeo: I bought seeds too and now im wondering if i just wasted my money?? I read the same thibg somewhere...that they dont reproduce well.

I dunno, I think they produce great, the figs are HUGE, and yellow, they look great

I'm not trying to talk anyone out of trying seeds.  Heck I even got some from Igor last season and started them but with everything else going on, I simply realized the truth and that taking them on for years without any assurance any of them would make a good fig tree, it simply is not feasible for me personally.  I don't have money, time or space to grow out thousands or even hundreds of fig trees for years and certainly can't handle any more disappointment in my life.

You might get lucky and produce a rare gem. You never know. :)

No caprifig, right? It will probably be tasty anyway.

Odds are it probably will not be tasty, that's what I'm trying to tell you.  If people could get tasty figs from just planting seeds then everybody would be doing it.  A desirable fig from seed is a rare thing.  It takes several years for a fig tree to produce figs from seed, if it produces them at all.  The only people who benefit from fig seeds are the ebay sellers who sell them to unknowing people, except for the plant researchers/breeders who have the funding, time and resources needed to carry seed plants to fruition.

Your dad said no more plants right?  I doubt he would like all those probably worthless seedlings stacked up everywhere.  :)

For an eleven year old, you certainly have a lot of knowledge.  When I was eleven...wait, I can't remember that far back lol.

Okay, Likeo, that gives me hope. I bought seeds because they r just easier to ship AND so much cheaper! I do a lot of vegetable gardening and Im just used to seeds. So u have had good luck from seeds? How long Did it take u to grow from seed to a producing tree?

Charlie, I totally get what u are saying....and including the dissapointment part. Its tough to try growing something that doesnt work out. Thx for the advice. By the way Igor was kind enough to send me seeds as well. I will likely try fig seeds at least for this year. To see something you planted sprout is just a wonderful feeling.

Hi smyfigs,
If you want to play with seeds use Apricot kernels - provided that apricots do perform well in your area of course.
I tried peaches ( good too), Apricots (from seeds, the bests so far), pears (on going), apples (so, so, sometimes worth it , although grafted apple trees are so cheap, so why bother). But they all took 5 to 6 years to get the first flowers, and the first fruits the next year.
But as seedlings, they never come true to fruit . If you want a big deception, try seeding cherries ... Those were the worst for me.
With figs, I've 3 or 4 from seeds here around, but I don't know if I'll get them to fruition.
It takes a fig cutting 3 years to fruit for me and be (almost) true to type, if it takes 5 from seed to be whatever comes out... Why take that path ?
Better wait to get cuttings from known strains ... And seed apricots .

Hmmm, interesting about the apricot kernels.  Peaches are the best, huh?  I'm trying apples right now.  I have 3 seeds that I got from a friend...Arkansas Black.  I don't know anything about this variety but I wanted to try seeds.  Yes, apple trees are very cheap but I'm spending all my money on fig cuttings lately so I have to save on something...lol.  I have a tiny yard and I mean tiny but I love figs.  All I have is time so why not try?  Yeah, cherries are not easy.  I had a Rainier Cherry tree and then it died after only producing 1 cherry and, I had the Lapin pollinator but still, the Reinier didn't give much fruit. It's not cold in California anymore so it gave up, I guess.  I getcha...seeds take a long time and they a lot can go wrong. Fig cuttings are a good choice.  I guess my budget is getting real thin now so I went the seed route to save money.  Advice well taken.  And, I like the apricot idea too!  Thanks, jdsfrance1
