Baskinta Purple 10-3-13

This is a little creamy peachy, just sweet enough, skin is also sweet, no seed crunch and about a 7.5

Mike: Very nice, thanks for sharing.

best,
Tam

Mike,
Seriously, I want to live at your house. How many varieties do you have anyway? You're always pulling another one out of nowhere and letting us see inside. I love it, thank you.

Very nice. Thanks.

WOW its looking very nice, I think its your first fruit because this excitement is always on first time. Anyhow it looks delicious from inside. Thanks for sharing the photo.

very nice fig ! Thanks for sharing your photos :)

Mike can you tell me more about this variety please? Two crops? How old is your tree? If I remember correctly this is a Lebanese variety? I love the looks of the pulp! Thanks for sharing.

Pattee, my tree is two years old. It comes from Baskinta Lebanon and it
does have a breba and main crop. Yes the pulp is more attractive than
my pic shows.

Looks good!

Does anyone have fruit from a Baskinta Brown?

Thanks Mike . Forgot to ask before , but maybe when you get a chance you could post a pic of the leaves? TIA.

OMG there's a Baskinta Brown too? The pulp color alone of the BP has me won over !

Pattee, here are some pics of the leaves.

Thanks Mike - I love the leaves too, nice pattern ! I like that is is not overly sweet too, great size , closed eye & great amber pulp color. Will add this one to my future list !

I thought I'd add a few pictures from my BP fig tree.
It gave me the first ripe fig on September 3rd and has one fig left.
My tree was very productive (I'm in Va 50 miles west of Wash., D.C. = zone 7) and is only 2 or three years old.

The figs were excellent.

The taste was unlike any of the other 50+ varieties my collection ripened this year.
There was a cane sugar element to the flavor which I haven't tasted in a fig before.

In my opinion (limited as it is) this is an excellent fig for my area and I will certainly be rooting more to increase the number of these I keep. Even if this variety turns out to be half as productive as it was this year - if the flavor holds up I'll be happy.

Last year I posted a picture of the breba if anyone is interested.

Michael, thanks for the post and pics. Matches mine perfectly. Good to see you on here.

Thanks Mike.
Still fighting health issues but still on the right side of the top soil.
Great to see you got ripe figs from this variety as the only other 2 folks I know that have these haven't had them ripen yet and I think this fig is a huge winner here in Virginia.
Glad to see your's looks just like mine as I was concerned a little bit about the figs not being purple (brebas aren't either).

It will be a keeper here also. You have to look close to see
a little purple. The Baskinta Brown is smaller and brown of course.

Michael , happy to "see" you ! Thanks for posting pics and descriptions. Seals my "need" lol, of one in future ! Prayers are still being sent for better health.

Patte,
Thank you.
I haven't been reading or posting lately, but hopefully I can do more soon.

I have been keeping good records of ripening times and taste, etc. so I can share that after my Vernino, Camuna, etc. finally ripen.

Thank goodness for my dog walker as she's out inventorying my figs for me right now.
What a find she turned out to be.
Now if only I can get her to do all the rootings I've promised.
Anyway, thanks again.

Sounds like you have some good help. That's a good thing . You have to work on you getting better first , figs will be ready when you are.

I have a tiny B Brown from Vern but not the purple. Anyone tried the brown?

Greg,
I don't know anyone with much experience with the BB. I have heard they aren't as good as the BP but I'm not sure what parameters were being used and I don't even remember who told me that and I don't recall what area of the country it was either - so . . .

I recently made arrangements to get the Brown so I may have an opinion in 2 or 3 years. Although my opinion will be based on growing in VA in zone 7 and on one tree of BB. I will root cuttings of the Purple as I'm impressed enough to want to grow and try at least 3 specimens.

After I get my collection sorted out we should talk as I've spent a lot of energy this year collecting and IDing cold hardy varieties.

[image]< Newbie asks "what is BP and BB?"

Hey there stranger.

A good way to ID the initials that seem to baffle newbies as well as some of us semi - newbies is to look at the topic. In this case = Baskinta Purple which equals BP. Then in discussion Baskinta Brown is mentioned = BB. It is a problem that has been complained about before -- that being folks like me who are too lazy to write out the names. Sorry.

OMG Thanks,  That was not my brightest moment.  A merlot moment [image]
