Baskinta Purple and Baskinta Brown

These varieties where introduced a few seasons ago now. I haven't seen much about them since then. I finally got Some fruit this year. I'm curious to hear feedback on these two. Baskinta purple is definetely a Brunswick type fig. I only got two figs from this one. It had a large open eye and I had to pick it early because of squirrels. It seemed to be sweeter and have a better flavor then my in ground Brunswick, nbut appears identical. I didn't get any fruit from Bruswick this year to compare. As for Baskinta brown a few people in past topics say it is a Celeste type. It definetely has a Celeste taste to me and looks Celeste like. Any input is appreciated.

I have both and agree with your assessment of Baskinta brown being basically just a Celeste in every way. It is an interesting observation of the purple, too. I believe it is much better in terms of flavor than my Brunswick ( and obviously differing color), but leaves, open eye,and propensity to split is definitely a common trait.

Thankfully this year it didn't rain a lot while these figs were ripening and I didn't have any split. The last few years we have had lots of rain and the figs from my in ground brunswick usually sour and split.

I am keeping Brunswick for its awesome tasting brebas because they don't split as much when they ripen in less rainy weather in August. The other
main issue is fruit flies -- they are attracted to figs when they ripen.

My brunswick does give many brebas because it is in ground and uncovered. Honestly, I am not a fan of Brunswick everyone I give them too love them, but I don't like them much. I just keep the tree since it is in ground and never needed to be covered. Last winter though was cold enough to kill it to the ground, but it came back pretty strong this summer.
