Battaglia Green 2013

Battaglia Green. Purchased cuttings for a good cause from Sybil M in March 2012. Thanks Sybil! Not much to say other than it is said to be a superior green fig. I will hold my opinion until I taste a few more. Clearly, this one needed a more time on the tree...but it is promising.

JD,
You do a great job of catching color in your photos.
I wish my BG's would hurry up as you just made them all the more appealing.

Thanks all.

I need to read more descriptions about the taste of Battaglia Green. I sampled this one before tasting a few very good dark figs. I remember this fig and I always will. It was berry flavored with a unique undertone/'kick' of something unlike any other fig I have tasted. I am not sure what the undertone was but it is very good. I want several more.

Thanks JD,

All your "hard" work will pay off!

and we'll all reap the benefits!

Thanks for all your detailed postings on all the varieties. It really helps me and I'm sure others out.

We'll have to give you a new title. How bout

I know that Battaglia is a slight variant of Ishia Green/Verte, but does anybody know if there is a difference in the the ripening time? Are they about the same, or does BG take longer to ripen?

Calvin,
I do not have Ischia Green to compare it. However, I believe that Frank (FMD) does. I think his trees are grounded so you may get an observation from 8B this season.

Thanks JD, and thanks for sharing all the pictures and information with us also. Much appreciated.

Frank most definitely has a Green Ischia. Maybe he'll chime in here. I have two but they are small and I won't be able to report on them for another two years.

As posted in another thread, my Green Ischia is over ten years old and one of my favorites. Jimmie provided me with a nice start of BG a few months ago which is now a sprawling in ground bush producing dozens of figs. I will post a comparison with Green Ischia later this fall. Thanks Jimmie.

JD that is another beautiful picture and wonderful description of the figs flavor.  I think we all are living vicariously through you.

So a dumb question about these beautiful green figs, that from the pictures seem to be somewhat firm on the outside still, even when ripe.  Do these kinds of figs get the "hangmans neck" and droop when they are ripe?  Or is there some other way that you tell when they're really ripe?  With all the varieties I've ripened so far, I can tell when they're ready to pick by the change in color, the softness, and the drooping neck.  (Sometimes other features, such as cracking or textural features like wrinkling, for some varieties).  But for varieties like this one, which appear from the photos to be smooth and green (and maybe even "firm") when they're ripe -- how do you tell when they're really ripe?

Mike,
I am still learning but here is what I have observed and it is purely anecdotage: I find it interesting that most browns, blacks, and purples exhibit a drooping neck when ripe whereas most non-dark (greens and yellows) that I have like Battaglia, Smith, LSU Gold, Golden Celeste swell quite noticeably, become softer to the touch, and most importantly for me, develop the dark sugar spots, i.e., it gets ugly. That's how I know. Other yellows and greens may get hangman's neck but not these.

Thanks Meghan, Frank, Charles, Calvin, Pete, Guiseppe, Mike, Goss, and Ryan.

having only had darker figs I am looking forward to green in a couple more years

More good work JD and another good fig sounds like

That looks great JD.  I hope to taste it in a few weeks.

Here's Green Ischia from last year. When my BG's ripen I'll post a photo and my opinion of their taste differences. Although my BG tree is 8 feet tall this will be it's first year with figs.
