Battaglia Green

Picked my first Battaglia Green today.  (Provenance of this tree -- from Sybil at Paradise Nursery).  It's a second year tree, rooted in early 2012.  Excellent flavor.  Sort of a unique fig flavor... I don't know how else to describe it other than unique to itself, but a very nice flavor, and very concentrated (strong) flavor.  I liked it quite a lot.  Interestingly, not extremely sweet.  The only negative is I'd say the skin is a little bit tough.  (A pretty minor negative point).  Overall a very satisfying fig!  I'd say
    sweetness:  5/10
    flavor concentration:  9/10
    jammy texture:  9/10
    skin:  a little tough
overall:  a unique "figgy" taste, good flavor concentration, excellent consistency.  overall about 7.5/10

I've got another one about ready to pick.  That one's not quite as wrinkled, so maybe the skin texture will be different.  (That's the one that's in the photo showing the eye).  I think this one's a keeper.

great pictures.  Love the color on those figs!  My grandmother used talked about someone she knew that had a green fig.  She said you had to peal it.  She thought that was the strangest thing.  But in the fig world I guess it's not too uncommon.

Mike, Nice looking fig! Perfectly ripe. I love the contrast of the green and dark red.

Mike...glad you had success with your Battaglia Green fig tree...I tasted my first BG's this season(Sept.) from a two year old tree that I purchased from Bill's Figs last year...the green outside combined with that dark maroon interior makes for a beautiful fig...like yours, my BG's had a certain thickness to the skin, but it was edible, and the delicious interior made it a winner in my book.

Mike

Thank you for the information, I think I am going to get a Battaglia soon, I am on a wait list at a nursery that sold out.  Nice pictures.

Very nice figs, thanks for sharing.

congrats ...very nice looking fig

That's a really good looking fig, I wish I could let them get that ripe down here, they would spoil first from the humidity and bugs I guess, but now that I have more varieties some may be able to make it that long on the tree. Next season I will let my newer varieties hang around a little longer just to see. Then again that can all be in my head and I just don't have the patience, lol.

Looks great.  That's one variety I really wanted from Jon's cuttings last year that I wasn't able to get.  That and White Greek!

My BG's were just wonderful this year. My only regret is I rooted 14 trees expecting to keep 4 and I got talked out of all of them. This is a variety that I want to have more then one tree of.
Mike yours looks great.

I got one the same day.  It took weeks to ripen because the temps were so low.  Near the eye the fig was much thicker and more ripe than near the stem.  The bottom of the fig had much tougher skin than the top and I attributed that to the cold weather as well.  Deep, deep red, strawberry taste more than fig for me.

More pictures.  This one was the second fig, picked and eaten the next day (10/17).  Though not as wrinkled, this one tasted every bit as good as the first one.  (Alas, that'll be it for this year, on this 2nd year tree).  (In a few days maybe I'll post a few of the other varieties).

Very tasty figs and pretty photos, thanks for sharing.

p.s. the skin on this one was still a bit "chewy", but definitely less "tough" than the first one.  Though both ripened in similar conditions (a good amount of cool nights, and cool (60's F) but quite sunny fall days), this one's skin was a lot smoother / less wrinkled.  The overall flavor was similarly excellent.  It seems as though letting this variety get wrinkled might increase the "toughness" of the skin.

Thanks Mike for all the info and pics :)

I'm with you Mike.  I also had my first BG late this summer.  The ripening conditions were not the best, fall rains starting to move in and the fig was not completely ripe but it was fantastic.  I can't imagine what a perfectly ripe BG tastes like.......can't wait for next year.  This is a fig I would make room for two or three trees.
