Bayernfeige Violetta / Violet Bavaria

Today I was down by Portland ,OR . At my Stepson's house shaving off a hillside so he can build a shop. I stopped at  Tsugawa Nursery and picked myself up a Bayernfeige Violetta . They are sold under the name Violet Bavaria  (B..Violetta) for $20.08. Twenty five % off.

On Labor Day I was up in Seattle , at KiwiBob's house for the Puget Sound Taste test. One of the figs tested was Bayernfeige Violetta. While there , I was told that it had a U.S. patent on it, and could not be propagated .

I talked to one of Tsugawa nursery's owners and and asked her about the patent, she said the original patent is in Germany and was not patented in the U.S. until 2006. Prior to '06 it was imported under the name Violet Bavaria and no patent is needed to propagate. here is the website she gave me .

Good to know, thanks for the info. So,a new name...Violet Bavaria!!

Sounds like the Samsung v. Apple argument. lol

Where are all its leaves? It's to soon to be going dormant. Did you drive it home in the back of a pick up.

Given the way the tree looks and my experience with nursery grown trees... My guess is the tree is severely root bound and has very little top growth this year.

Appears to be sun starved with that nodal distance and scraggly growth.

It was in my passenger seat for the drive home . I even put the seat belt on it for safety . lol .
James & Martin: At the nursery their fig trees are tucked in the back of the property against a wall . But they are surrounded by taller fruit trees , mostly apples and pears. The Fig trees only get Direct sun for maybe an hour per day , So they look like  Charlie Brown's Christmas trees. I know that the tree that I got is root bound . It is almost 5 ft. tall and in a 8" pot,  I'm going to fix that .

cody.. so how is the tree doing now days? is it waking up?

Here is what it looks like here in NM.

I ordered a violetta from Oasis Tropical Plants and Trees.  Do you think this is the same plant you are talking about here?

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

The tree for sale is a VIOLETTA FIG TREE. A bavarian variety now available in the Northwest. May be the most frost resistant of all figs. Known for its thin skin and sweet, juicy texture, a favorite among fig connoisseurs. Will produce 2 crops per year of good-sized fruit. This is a tissue cultured Fig Tree that is a disease free exact replica of the original mother plant, as this is the only way to guarantee that. All of our Fig Trees are very beautiful, healthy and disease free to ensure your growing success.

Thanks for the help and have a big smile to all.

Mine has never been purple and still has the German tags on it.. There seems to be a bit of salesman ship on the description. The leaf looks consistent.

lovely fig. what does it taste like? is it worth keeping?

Properly ripened, it is great. But here in the high desert, we are very dry and  hot!

My 4 years old Violeta Bayernfeige is a productive tree, very cold hardy,but...after 3 full seasons, i would give her a 6 out of 10....many other good figs out there!!!

Your opinion of this fig is well appreciated Mario. You have experience with some highly unusual and excellent figs. 6/10 does not sound like a good flavored fig. Any others feel the same about the flavor of Bayernfeige?

Better check into this nursery, lot of bad reviews.

Yes I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!  That is what happens when I am new to this field. But I learn like the rest of us here the hard way. I found this pic on other sits for different figs. Also have seen the same pic from other countries. Sure make matters confusing at the least.  Makes me feel like all came from a Turkey or Celeste somewhere in history.

Have a big smile to all

Pete ,
I am happy to report that my B.Violetta is starting to wake up and is putting on new growth.

The poor tree was totally root bound. I up=potted it into a 10 gallon nursery pot with many air holes drilled into it .  A Wicked wind storm destroyed my Greenhouse a few months ago . The violet Bavaria did not fair too well , as did several other figs . I ended up moving all of my figs to the barn. It's well insulated and a carriage door faces due south. on the rare day here in rainy Western Washington state . I open the carriage door to give them some well needed sun.

Bigsmile,

Bayernfeige Violetta, is considered a English Brown Turkey by many collectors.

Here it's a very sweet, large, late fig. Needs a lot of management.

Not sure about the claim of it being very frost resistant. I think they mean it's resistant against early fall  frost.

Don't see how it can be spring frost resistant. As it is one of the first to break bud here.

In my opinion, Marseilles Black VS, and Gino's are what I call frost resistant. Both of those two break bud as much as a month later then Bayernfeige Violetta.

I don't consider Bayernfeige Violetta a fig for the conissuer . Here it has a very sweet figgy taste. Nothing sophisitcated in taste, like maybe Danny's Delight.

Nor, do I consider it overly cold hardy. Maybe cold hardy to minus 4 to 6 degrees Fahrenheite.
A zone 6b maybe, without winter protection, once it's mature?

Our biggest problem with it has been the very sweet fruit draws tons of flies, in the fall. So, we have to put mosquito netting over it to keep the flies off the fruit.

It's are sweetest fig.

Bob Connecticut zone 5b/6a

Thanks for the Info Bob. Not sure what my Violetta fig will be but what the heck. English Brown Turkey will be ok by me. It gets down to 5-0 degrees here once in 100 years. So I will keep what ever it is. 90 degrees here today and very dry. Great fig weather I figure.
