What is it? Larry

Its a Capri fig. Could have been fertilizer effected. Never seen this happen

Hi,
This is a misshaped fig. What you see is the guts of the fig. So useless. I would cut it out to let the tree focus on correctly shaped fruits or on leaf growth.
You can get such fruits every now and then on every tree. I just remove them.

where does one get a caprifig?  I still don't understand that!

You get a capri fig in areas that have the wasp.

Well, when a mommy fig plant get impregnated by the wasp (no stork here), she produces seeds. Some of those seeds grow up being men, and we call them caprifigs. The never put the toilet seat down. And don't ask them to clean their room. But they provide a nice cozy home for the fig wasp, and pollen to boot!

Lol...Smatthew. So where does one purchase this "male" caprifig?

Smyfigs - most people have no use for a caprifig. They're also known as "goat figs" since they generally produce figs that only a goat would eat. And while the persistent caprifigs such as enderud or Capri Q produce "edible" figs - most agree that they're not worth growing for the fruit.

Hmmm, I thought this was the case. So why do people (even here in CA) want to have one? I mean obviously we have the wasp so why have one of those hahum.., ugly guys?

Well, having a caprifig helps ensure that you have wasps to pollinate your figs.  People trying to breed Common figs will use one of those persistent caprifigs as the male.
Here in CA, Caprifigs are a "public nuisance" and unless properly maintained are subject to removal by the local ag department. You're supposed to remove the mamme figs, split them open, and treat with a fungicide. The Mamme figs can be treated without hurting the wasps. It's against the law to have Mamme and profichi figs on the tree at the same time.   The reason is that the fig wasps tend to spread things along with pollen - often leading to rotten figs.
By law in California, if you're growing Smyrna figs, you may have 1 caprifig per 66 trees.

if you need one, I can ship you one for free

Awww, wow, thats so nice of you, Mai. I am interested, of course but will it help my fig trees do you think? And, what would the tree cost?

smathew, Great explanation in layman terms. What are the odds of a fig seed becoming a common fig, or a female tree that will ripen fig with out pollination?

If a fig is pollinated by a caudaceous caprifig (non-persistent), then none of the seeds will produce a common fig.  If you use a persistent caprifig, such as Capri Q, Enderud, Saleeb, or Croisic, then 25% of the offspring will be common figs.

So If wish wish to grow only one Caprifig tree for my orchard, which variety would be best?

I've heard good things about Milco - long season. Haven't been able to find a cutting of it yet though. I'm aiming for 3 caprifigs - early, middle, and late.  I've heard Stanford, Milco, and Roeding #3 cover the entire fig season.

Great info. Thanks! If you ever find them please report back on your results.

Smatthew, thats great info!! I suppose three caprifigs are best then. I need to do mire research on this!

I have six caprifigs 2 of each. Going to introduce the wasp if i can get somefriendly figgers to send me a fig full of these little guys. I have capri figs but not sure how it works. The eyes are still closed and they are hard and green. I have them in five gallon buckets and they are all big one year old trees.

FigPig - what varieties of caprifig do you have?

Richie,

Are you going to try manual pollination? Please keep us up to date on this project.

I got them from Aaron from California. He chose them for this project. He named them himself. Going to try hand pollinating them but realky want to get a couple preloaded caprifig mailed in. Easiest way to hand pollinating from what i read is to split the fig almost in half while still attached to tree. Carfully put pollen dust into fig. Thats it. I have split a fig like this just to see what happened. It ripens as usual and did not fall or rot. Had no pollen at time
