Is there a video of Bill's setup?

To:Zetgeist:When in pot the roots are limited so ,one or 2 trunks is all the roots can sustain.
If multi trunk ,in pot the plant will not form ,only a few fruits.
However if the plant is in ground one can leave ,3 to 5 trunks and have them all fruit abundantly.

Understood! Thank you for explaining!

hi,
I started using "extinct lime" last year. I rub one coffee cup on the trunks and spread a coffee cup on the dirt.
My reason for that is that it deters/kills insects. I got rid of the caterpillars of the fig Moth and most of the ants vanished.
The problem with lime is that their are lots of types. There is an "active lime". When hydrated that one will go hot and could burn the trunk and the roots.
So when you choose lime open both eyes, and read carefully.
A layer of lime would probably act as a weed barrier, while providing calcium to the plant. Calcium is important for fruiting.
For those raising tomato plants, the dark bottom disease in the fruit is due to lack of calcium in the dirt.

As for having a layer at the bottom of the pot, I would say that this will clog the water wicks, so I'd rather use it at the top of the pot or mixed in the dirt.
When you try something new, just start using it on one tree. See how that goes, then two, three when you're confident that it is worth the use.

In pot or in ground, a sucker is nearest thing to the roots and to the full sap flow. So leaving them means delaying the tree in growing and fruiting.
Yet, suckers are a good propagation way (when not on a grafted tree - thus grafting has me scared ) as they get callus and their own roots easily.
So if you can use them leave some. Remove some to get thicker ones. If you don't need them, remove them asap . Really don't wait the end of the season. Remove them as they appear.
What I've been doing is pull and pot some as I spot them. If they make it, good, if they don't, then let's go chase another one. Or wait for another one to show its nose .
Those in pots are guinea pigs for me... And of course when I try to kill them, last year, I had two make one fruit each ... go figure ...
Now, I'm curious to see if they'll fruit more this year... That's one of my "scientific" experience for this year ... Have fun !
