Bellone

It gets better every year. Excellent flavored, solid fig.

Compared with Melanzana MS:

Lovely looking fig Leon, is this fig a late fig?

Great pics Leon,

Do you mind explaining as to why you are comparing this fig to a Melanzana MS?
Are they the same in taste, color, origin?

I have both: Melanzana and Melanzana MS.
I tasted (first time ever) an over ripe MMS a couple weeks ago and all I can say is I can't wait for this fig to offer me more fruit in the future.
It was awesome!

Maybe you can convince me to add the Bellone to my collection.

Thanks

Hi Rafed:
Bellone and MMS both ripen about the same time and they are very similar in flavor. They are definitely not the same fig. Bellone has a three to five lobed leaf and MMS has leaves like Brunswick. The same Bellone fig was a dark purple color last year and this year it is blotchy. Go figure! MMS is mostly greenish.

I once had a "Melanzana" Fig which originated from a NJ nursery selling Italian Fig Trees. However, it would drop alot of the fruit so I got rid of it. Here are some photos of that tree, it's leaves, and the few figs that ripened.
I somehow think that the "Melanzana" I received was not true to variety.

My Bellone comes from Baud. It is a potted tree and both last year and this year, it only produced a few figs. I am going to plant it in the ground come spring.

The MMS is a 7 foot tree already in the ground.

Nelson, Bellone started ripening figs a few weeks ago. We have had some unsual weather this season so it's hard to give an accurate timeline. Baud says Bellone starts ripening around the last week in August and continues until the end of October.

Rafed, I need more time to provide a convincing opinion on the Bellone. But you are right, the MMS is an excellent fig so far.
