Best 100% Greenhouse grown fig

I grew a few fig trees in my greenhouse this year to test fruit quality. The temps inside this year ranged up to 110 degrees with exhaust and circulation fan help. The figs were grown in cloth pots(smart pots and root pots) and performed excellent. The growth was better than my outside figs and healthier. All the figs were delicious but the winner was Vasilika Sika. I picked 3 to take pics of but unfortunately for you(not me) they never made it out of the greenhouse. They are large green figs with dark red pulp and they are my new favorite of the year. They were very sweet and rich with a nice creamy texture. The quality topped my Longue D'aout which was the previous favorite. I was very lucky to taste them during a rest week from chemotherapy. With the chemo I couldn't taste sweetness but it comes back off treatment.

Nicely done Jason! What other varieties did you keep in the greenhouse?

Great to know, was wondering if such high temps would do damage to figs.

Very nice, thanks for sharing. How is your health now, Jason? I wish get well.

Best,
Tam

hot and dry.. well at least well circulated air seems to be the best way to grow figs. weather here has been rather better for last month or so. the temp wasn't too high, but it was much drier than the earlier season. the fig seems to like this much better. of couse, since you have green house, you can create your  own weather :)

So the Vasilika Sika was better than Col de Dame Noir?  Wait till Martin hears that statement.

Jason,

Hate to hear about your health issues. I hope you get well soon and will be here for you.

Good luck

Jason, hope you are doing well! I am stunned to hear you are able to replicate fig flavor with greenhouse grown figs, that is amazing!

I am very shocked how well everything grows in the greenhouse. The leaves are so lush and the fruit quality is excellent. It's so easy to control the moisture in there. Plus minimal pests and fig thieves.

In the greenhouse, I grew:
Vasilika Sika
Longue D'Aout
Valle negra
Various citrus and starfruit

Last fall I ripened black Madeira, preto, col de dame noir, and hardy Chicago.

Pete- it is hot and not as humid as outside in the greenhouse. I wish I had more room in there! I think the figs love the heat.

Bob- my cddn breba were excellent but my mains split like crazy and were very late. There are many green ones still on the tree even though I started its season in the greenhouse in February.

Rafed and Tam- I am in the radiation phase of treatment so I can no longer taste my figs. The chemo shrank my tumors quite a bit so I am optimistic about my recovery. I finish my treatments in November and will know around Chrismas if it worked.

Jason,
First off, I want to wish you the best with your health.

Second off, I blame you every time my wife complains about my new greenhouse.

Did you let any of your greenhouse trees go dormant?

Jason, What was the minimum temp you let your greenhouse get in the winter? I plan on heating it this year.

Get well Jason.

Lol. I love my greenhouse and my wife loves that my man cave is outside the house where my messiness is out of sight. Plus my rooted cuttings and are outside now. Feel free to throw me under the bus. I know you'll love it.

I keep my greenhouse pretty warm between 45-50 using a plug in radiator heater and a infrared dish heater. The two coldest months I let it go to 40 to let the ones that need rest go dormant although if it's sunny during the day it won't happen. I keep citrus and other tropicals in there so I can't let it get too cold.

Where are the pics! I love seeing other set ups.

Hope you feel Better Jason, Do not worry the taste will come back, but it will take time, Feel Better and Good Luck
Mark

First I would like to wish you well also. I've been reading lots of good things about the vasalika sika and I'm glad to hear that's your new favorite (from the green house). I just found out that I have one on the way that I'm pretty excited about.

How old are those trees?

I'm growing some in-ground in a greenhouse, but haven't gotten any fruit yet.  I got them as 2" tc's from Wellspring last summer, but they're fairly big now (each has dozens of 3-5ft stems/branches).  I've been wondering if the reason they haven't fruited is because I'm growing them under a double layer of plastic or if they're just too young/immature.  I've read other folks on here report that it takes them 3-4 years to get fruit off of little tc's.

Jason, best of luck with your remaining treatments.  You might remember a thread a few weeks ago in which Herman2 and others discussed that the Vasilika Sika that is typically found in the U.S. is a Dalmatie type (leaves with longer fingers) whereas the variety called Vasilika Sika in Europe is quite different. Do you know which one you have?

I have both. The ones I have eaten are the longer finger variety.

My Vasilika is 2yrs old. For me everything grows better in the GH.
