Best dog

I was wondering what breed of dog would be best for getting rid of unwanted fruit thieves. Squirrels are under control at the moment thanks to my hawk neighbor however I still have moles, birds, raccoon's, possums, stray cats etc... So any experts on dogs out there?

German short haired pointer will take care of most of that. Get a female. A male will likely go off and take care of the whole county.

Terriers were bred specially for vermin control.

Agree with CharlesC, Terriers were bred to hunt and kill vermin. I had a rat terrier and all he did has hunt down moles, squirrels and birds all day long (would kill a surprising amount per day).

Sure thing. Jack Russell terrier, the best but make sure you keep an eye on your other pets. Those things would kill everything that walks . Oh and they think they're Great Danes!!!

Just saying but I prefer my cat, none of my apples and sunflowers were lost this year. But can't say the same for a groundhog that attacked the garden but he was gone after I found a trap at Home Depot for one cent some how.

Another vote for the Terriers.  Rat terrier we had when growing up, was the only dog we had that would kill a skunk, and was smart enough to learn what we did not want harmed. Never had a Jack Russell but from my view very similar dogs. Heart of Lions

Another vote for terrier, and positively a vote for a female terrier.
The bigger the better.
Red nose American pit bull terrier, female will be best, and the most obedient while the best hunter.
Get one like my present pix#1 and my previous Pix #2,best friend!.
The southern people used this dog to go wild hog hunting.

Whatever type dog you get don't try my dog. Our family's new puppy love it eat fig leaves right off the tree. She eats all the leaves. I hope that they recover i just put them in gallon pots before she eat the leaves

Pitts can be cool, but I would be worried it might eat my old chihuahua mixes. Wow a fig eating dog is just bad news,  I hope you can break him of that or fence off your tree.

my welsh terriers loooove figs.  And rats.  And squirrels. etc.

Definitely terrier types. My  mini dachshunds really make the squirrels clamber up the oak trees.

I love dogs and especially my black lab.
She loves everyone except coyote and squirrels and does a great job protecting the figs for me.
Also more importantly even though she is way over crowded with container figs all over the garage and patio where she lives and likes to sun bathe she has never damaged any fig trees.

My chocolate lab chased off everything from deer to song birds

Dachshunds are great, but I have had a couple that went through he yard like a ditch witch and it was nearly impossible to keep them in the yard, (mine kept tunneling out ), my wife's solution was to stuff them until they were so fat they wouldn't bother to tunnel any more. Of course the problem with that was they wouldn't hunt any more either.

Labs are great too but a little to large for me to deal with now that I am older. My wife insists on letting our dogs sleep inside at night so that means I have to bath them regularly. That is a lot of lifting...

So far terriers are sounding like the best bet, I do want one that's fast enough to at least get a mouthful of fur off the squirrels tails. Hopefully that will be enough to make the critters clear out and stay out of my yard.

If you are going to keep them in,the house, very short hair is ,a must, also dark color, not white.

Welsh Terrier.  One of the best breeds ever.  Will chase everything.  Great family dog too!  Best temperament of all terrier breeds.

Only 1 groundhog? That's unusual. There's always more. I started trapping GH's about 15 years ago when my brussels sprouts disappeared.  Easily caught over 60 since then. Caught my biggest one last year, a monster, it was trying to intimidate me by continually clicking its teeth together warning what it would do if it got a hold of me.

Patterdale Terrier..I used to own three of them. They are 16 lbs. of nothing but Muscle and brave beyond belief!! My little Female "Gypsy" killed a Groundhog by herself when she was only 1 1/2 years old...Outstanding Dogs very rare! They are used  to run Game out of holes in the Ground.

It was more but I decided the trap was inferior because I got a possum and the worst one to deal with was a skunk. The others I got rid of after repeatedly throwing my dog's and cat's crap down its hole and packing it back with dirt then sealing with a rock. Did pretty good but next year will be different. Also I forgot to say by dog is a mix probably, got from a shelter it looks like a smal German Shepard about 1 1/2, 2 feet tall. It attacked a skunk and I think he's forever scared of skunks.

Thanks for the great info, I will look the terriers up. I can't let the wife know what their real job is however, she likes the furry bandits.

Maybe a low powered pellet gun to like ward off the squirrels?
