Has their been a best performing variety for you? I mean regardless of year or freezes or drought or heat waves. Which single variety is your most consistent performer year after year?

I have a dozen excellent performing varieties,because they are ,the result of trial and error after I grew (modestly,the number is)over a hundred varieties,in my difficult climate,and.out of them all ,the best performing,in all climatic conditions here in ,NJ location,is:

For me it's Hardy Chicago but it's in ground so it's not a fair comparison.

Galicia Negra, De La Reina - Pons, Genovese Nero - Rafed's, Sbayi, Souadi, Acciano, Any Rimada, Sodus Sicilian, any Bass, Pons or Axier fig, any great tasting fig.

All my figs are  in ground too.

From my 2 years of growing multiple varieties, Marseilles Black VS, Dark Portuguese, and Bari have the most growth/figs.  I believe they are all in the Mt Etna category.

Hi,
Well 2012 took care of the bigger trees, and I have been adding to the collection since then.
But this year my bigger "Dalmatie" surprised me with more than a hundred figs from that tree in this season.
I have an unknown strain "unknown from the Italian gardener" that is as big and produced some 40 figs - so nothing to compare to the "Dalmatie".
BT produced well, although I'm kind of deceived by the number of maincrop figs ... But ok, this year was her first true production year due to her age.
All other trees are still growing and going to real production - but sampling on those was really fun .

So "Dalmatie" for me for this year - the tree is bush form with 6 stems coming from near the ground, well branched at different levels and are all at 2 meters of height.
What impressed me even more, is that all figs on that "Dalmatie" ripened - that is I have no lost fig due to late ripening... That's truly impressive (IMO) !

My best performing figs this past season are:  (all potted)

DFIC0023 - For its robustness, rapid growth, and great yield of nice figs for its age

Zidi '2 - a very strong grower showing signs of being a prolific tree

Zidi '1 - a clean and healthy plant giving big and delicious figs

Violeta - Not many figs  but rather large and tasty

all above very young, rooted in the spring of 2013.

It would be hard to pick a single variety as I have many that do very well year after year. Is it fair to compare a ten year old tree to a 2 year old?

If I were to pick the figs that have recently impressed me I'd mention Lemon as it produced an almost unbelievably huge crop of large high quality figs and many were over 100 grams.

Blanche de Deux Saisons, Battaglia Green, Ronde de Bordeaux, Monstueuse, Cavaliere, Longue D'Aout, Angelique, Morena, St. Jerome, Florea, St Rita, Archipel, are varieties I intend to add another tree to my potted orchard.

I had 105 varieties ripen figs for me (not including the trees too young to produce figs of high quality like my one year olds that ripened one or two figs) and to list all the varieties I thought were very good would be a long list.

If I had to pick a single variety it would be Ronde de Bordeaux as this variety is cold hardy, ripens early, keeps ripening figs for a long time and has a wonderful flavor (not in my top 5 flavor-wise but very good). I have not had this variety for a long time but in the last two years since it was moved to my big pots it has been very impressive.

My 2 JH Adriatics produced very good figs (last year they were great) but they were late this year and I only got to harvest 1/3 of their figs. If I had managed these trees more closely and removed some of the figs early they might have been in my top five again. And I'd mention Florea again as it ripened first and gave me quite a lot of figs over a much longer time then most. It's flavor is good enough to make it a tree I'd recommend as it's also very cold hardy.

Michael, taking this and your ripening order thread information together. I have to ask, how old is your Lemon? Did you get it from JR?
