Big fig on a little tree

Christmas before last I was down in Fla. and I found a Kadota fig on the close out table at HD. It was the last one they had and it was a sorry little barely rooted bent twig... but, for $3 I said what the heck. I moved it up to a bag in the kiddy pool but it didn't show me much growth over the summer. I had it in a semi heated room next to a South facing window over the winter. The leaves closest to the window got frostbite but otherwise it stayed green. In the spring it put on a couple of figs, and started a growth spurt. And, those breba figs just kept growing and growing.

It's all hanging over that side. The others are VdB and HC that were started from cuttings around the same time.

Not a lot of flavor, some crunch, but it reminded me of figs from a tree my grandfather had when I was a kid so it tasted pretty good to me. My wife proclaimed it "kind of weird". She liked the breba off the VdB better

I'm going to let the other one ripen for another day or two and see if that helps. There are half a dozen main crop coming and it will be interesting to see how they differ from the breba.

Even at $3 I wasn't sure it was a bargain when I bought it. But, for less than postage and some patience it looks like I'll get a good tree out of it.

Very cool story and a great find. A variety that grows that quickly and produces a Breba crop at such young age is a bargain at any price, let alone at $3. Congrats and taste will improve on main crop and with age.
PS.
could be a Black Jack by the way.

Definitely not Kadota.

Could be LSU Purple, lighter top highlights kinda looks like it.

I would definitely say it is a black jack.  I just picked a couple brebas that were identical to yours.  they were the size of my palm. the insides of mine were stained with a purple color on the skin walls.  I can't tell from your pictures. tried to load pictures but it says my file exceeds the size limit. Not sure how to shrink the picture to load.

Okay, I had picked the other fig, that was hidden by leaves, and maybe not as ripe. One day and this one darkened up, and sweetened up (or so the ants tell me). It was sweeter, and had a lot more flavor than the other one. I'm going to start using ants as an indicator of ripeness.

I took pictures with a better camera. With a picture showing leaves and stem, in the hopes that that will help with ID. The big box stores should just label them as mystery figs if, as it seems, they don't know what they're selling.

hi,
Are the leaves thick and velvety ?

No, they look and feel like the leaves of the HC and MBVS.
