Birds eating figs?

Herman,
I wish you luck with Garfield.

But as a warning,
they are more pain than gain.

Cats will urinate and deficate in your
garden beds if you have them,
especially in the fall and early spring.
They also will use your containers as their toilets.
Males will also mark the containers and your trees trunks.

They do help a little with the birds and squirrels,
but Garfield will roam the neighborhood,
so he is not always on watch.

Also during lazy days of summer when figs are ripe,
during the heat of the day,
Garfield is napping not hunting,
but birds are still eating.

I have two cats as pets indoors.

As for using cats as fig watch dogs,
they cause far too much damage to the property
compared to a few figs they might save.

Either way, good luck,
and don't feed garfield too much food,
he will get lazy like the real garfield.

Michael;

Your post rung a bell with me.  I had great success with the owl and then the
snake in the cherry tree but then they didn't work so I gave up on them.  I think
you may be right that variety is the spice of life.....err figs!

And that last formula:
creativity and humor is a good one.  I need to think of some creative ideas that will
make the birds........or at least me laugh.

Birds are a problem by day but coons and possums are a problem at night where I live. Heck, I can't win for losing! If I put out cat food for the cats, it draws the coons and they can wipe out a one tree in one night! I don't live out in the country so I can't let dogs roam out at night. I wish I could. The best that works is the bird netting. Robins break limbs and I pop everyone I see in my trees. Cardinals, Brown Thrashers and Mocking birds, and Wrens are a huge problem for me. So, you're gonna loose some figs but doing something is better than doing nothing

Outdoor cats should have a litter box or they will use loose soil.

Here is the solution, a pee gravel litter box.

Getting them fixed will stop them from spraying and fighting. They will not roam as far after either.

Just me a guy at the feed store. To get rid of coons or possoms, he recommended getting coyote pee from Walmart and place it yards away from the trees and the coons and possums will stay away. Hmmmmmm, I'm gonna have to try this.

Alan,
Sorry to get back so late. I suggest a scarecrow as you can rig them up to sing and dance and do all sorts of stuff. Anything with two forward facing eyes seems to scare them - at least for a bit. Good luck.
