Bummer!  Still looks very tasty!  The food wars are vicious and need serious weapons.

We have huge commercial date orchards here, and suddenly these big brown or white bags appear hanging over the clusters.  I thought they were for bird protection, but nope!  Rain!!

Then it goes back to what a bird can't see, it won't notice... unless they have a sense of smell.  OMG  Never thought of that!

Suzi, my birds are so evil that if they could pick up a gun, they'd shoot me, just to watch me die.
They are so mean, that the only thing they'd share with me is a communicable disease.
They'd cry over my wounds  just to get salt in them.

There sure are some mean and evil birds on my property!

Suzi,

They quicky fig out what's under the bags. And yes, they have a keen sense of smell. Recall vultures.

Frank- that was hilarious! Thanks!! I am about to declare Jihad on my mockingbirds too.

Ruben, the top three most diabolical bird species, IMO are mockingbirds, blue jays and crows.
Blue jays can literally untie the knots on the twine holding the bird netting together, slip past the netting, gorge themselves on figs, slip back out and tie the twine back up to cover up the crime. Oh yes they can!

One of the links recently posted had a comparison of bird deterrent methods.  The only 2 that seemed to work both had mylar ribbons.  One was just fishing line with mylar tied to it.

The worst are Cockatoos. Mine will eat anything he wants and does not matter what the poor fruit is in. Has been known to break a cookie jar just to get what was inside.

BTW he is a rescue from poor conditions and was fed only sunflower seeds and french bread when I found him. So he can have free fruit and veggies all he wants.
