Martin,
I have been looking back at the photos of your harvest this season. How would you rank the following figs in terms of taste and productivity?

  • Black Bethlehem
  • Dark Portuguese
  • Hardy Chicago
  • Mavra Sika
  • Ronde de Bordeaux
  • Sal's El
  • Santa Cruz Dark
  • Violette de Bordeaux

Jd i could not fairly answer that question.
I did not treat all trees the same or some are just younger than others and not at the full capacity in production.
In your order of listing

Black Bethlehem - Young first season producing - but does well and will produce well if i keep it. Did no pruning of limbs. Needs root pruning if i keep.

Dark Portuguese - second season producing and produces well for age and size. Pruned a few but not all limbs. Needs root pruning this coming winter.

Hardy Chicago - mature tree . Root pruned and cut some scion in winter, new growth was slow growing and needed no pruning of its limbs . Produces similar for me each season and is ole reliable in taste.

Mavra Sika - acts like Black Bethlehem. Needs root pruning in winter if i keep.

Ronde de Bordeaux - 1 tree no limb pruning , the other ronde a couple limbs pruned only.  Produced good . Very easy tree for anyone to grow in my opinion. Older plant needs root pruning.

EL.Sals - mature tree -similar habit to hardy chicago year after year ole reliable, produces a little bit more figs than hardy chicago.

Santa Cruz Dark -  growth slowed down on this plant no limbs needed pruned and put on a good crop of figs , maybe 5 fell early on but all the rest getting ripe now. For its size good amount of figs that are getting ripe. Needs root pruning but i have other plans for it.

Violet de Bordeaux.
again this year grew agressive and had to prune a lot. It wants to grow many new shoots on each limb. This season produced large amount of figs and cause of this taken longer to ripen and many are smaller with a few normal size ones on branches that most new shoot were removed.
Needs root pruning again after root pruning year before last in its 30 gallon pot. Figs are just starting here and there now.

Late dormant season i have lots of root pruning to do on various trees if i want to keep them at there best overall. Some wont be in yard next season  to make room for the smaller ones that are growing.  Will start to fertilize less as i change the mix in more of the pots after root pruning.
