Black Ischia

Friday I picked a Black Ischia off of my young tree. I had picked a couple of them at the beginning of July and the taste was rather bland except for being sweet. The fig I picked Friday was completely ripe but not overripe. It was plenty sweet but no sign of fig flavor, none at all. Rather it had another fruity flavor not much unlike plum maybe. Has anyone else tasted one and if so how did it taste to you.

Yes I tasted them before and they are absolutelly delicious,a nature candy,in fact.
I bet it was raining or the soil is wet,and is sucking too much water inside.
Also the excessive heat can make them tasteless.
In the right climate it is the cultivar other are compared to.

Also:Edit note:maybe you fertilized heavy, because that will result in inferior fruits.

Herman thanks for the reply. I've used no heavy fertilizer but we had periods of heavy rain over the last month and the temps in the upper nineties for a lot of that time. It is also in it's second growing year in a 3 gallon pot. Perhaps its a combination of all of the above. It will go in the ground for next years crop and hopefully it will come into it's own.

Gene,

Can you post pictures of the leaves ? I have an unknown
tree with figs that look something like that.
Thank You.

Yes my tree was in ground not in Container, and that will make a huge difference .
Also the interior on your fruits is off color,it should be red.
That tell me it was missing something, nutrients minerals etc.

Sure Debbie, no problem.

Older leaf from early in the year, still on tree.

Newer leaf from later in early summer.

Newest leaves on very top of tree.

Herman, it's been a long hot dry summer for the most part and sometimes it was hard to keep them watered evenly. Then we got some ungodly rain for a period and then drought again. The last weather event was all the rain we got from Tropical Storm Lee. Since then the weather has calmed itself with temps in the upper 80's and a few little showers now and then. All my other in ground trees are really lookiong good in this weather. Even the Paradiso I got from you is ripening figs that I should eat by weeks end. I will post pictures when they are ready to pick.

First time BI ripening for me as a breba was in Aug. Not at all impressed. Its a new tree(1st yr) and hopefully it will be a gem in 2 years.  Better tasting for a 1st year fig was Gypsy(Zingarella) from RW.
