Black Ischia

Just thought I'd post a few photos of my Ischia Black, which is now on my must keep list. It's fabulous, I now understand the hoopla around this fig. IMG_3919.JPG

That centre does look delicious congrats.
Any hints on what it tasted like?

Pino, it's chewy, jammy, sweet, but not overly, nice acid balance, very berry, good amount of seed crunch, and a lingering taste that is really satisfying. After tasting 30 -40 different figs the past couple of days, this is one that stands out. My young plant looks to be very productive as well. My gratitude to Neil for this one.

Looks very good. Nothing like my ishia's. Green & white. Your tree looks, very healthy too. The inside of the black ischia looks like blackberry jam. Thanks, for the pic.

I am glad for you Gary enjoy it!  In your location I can see a lasting relationship..lol

Gary is this UC Davis variety?

Yes Brian, it is.

Thanks for the pictures. It's loaded with figs! I thought this variety was supposed to be a poor producer, like one or two figs a year. You must be doing something right.
I have a FMV Free Black Ischia, which is not the UC Davis strain. I hope mine grows, produces and tastes as good as yours.

I have to say, this one has been surprising. As you say, Mara, it is loaded with figs and very healthy. I hope yours does as well.

Thats a productive little tree

I think the rap on Black Ischia from the Davis Repository is that it's heavily infected and the growth slow and stunted by FMV, which has been the case for me. It is, however, fairly productive for it's size. If you can get this to grow large, I suspect you'll have a pretty big crop.

Vladis, your fruits, as nice as they look, do not appear to be the same as the USDA Black Ischia from Davis. What little I can make out of the leaves shows longer fingers than our Black Ischia. Do you know the origin of your tree?

I second opinion of Neil,on account of shape of fruits.
Ischia Black from UCD has a neck, while ,Vladis fruits are totally round.
However ,i will not argue that Vladis ,fig is not Ischia Black, because I have seen other fig trees making different shape fruits in different climates, sometimes ,being caprified ,makes the fruit become a different shape or color(interior-exterior) compared to ,non caprified, however,I also notice ,there is a substantial difference in shape ,in the 2 specimen discussed here.

I would have either one in a heartbeat.

Very nice looking fig, figgary.

It sure looks different from the one Vladis has, even the leafs. In almost all the internet photos i saw, the black Ischia was more elongated, like the one figgary has.

Very nice figs Gary

Thank you Francisco and Jaime. It is a special fig.

Nice fruit and tree, Gary.  You do a great job growing trees which stands out with those that have a reputation that don't grow well.

Here is my alleged non uc davis ischia black from a reputable seller. It is the first fig from this tree so the fig is on the small side. I see similarities to the uc davis variety besides leaf shape. This topic has been debated many times now. Here's a few pics.

Thank you, Harvey. Kind words from an expert:)

Brian, I see similarities, but hard to tell from young trees. How is the flavor?

Leaves are too fresh green looking, and do not have strongly red tinted stems.  Could still be BI.

Your Ischia black looks like it's been pollinated ?

Vinnie, I know that my figs are pollinated by a wasp - blastofagoy. I managed to take a photo on my fig wasps.
