Black Jack

This DNA tests the same as Brown Turkey at USDA / UC Davis, but seldom behaves / looks like all my other BTs (or BTs by other names)

I still think it is similar to BT, but more in the direction of Black Mission - sort of a hybrid. Does make a gorgeous fig.

I fully agree this is a better tasting, fig than California Brown Turkey, and that it has Mission Flavor and taste.
I have the cuttings from you grown into a very small tree but it produced a dozen of fruits last year and it has another dozen this year.
The winter is keeping it small, without any pruning, because it loses most wood.

That is beautiful. How can a fig be genetically the same as one and produce a fruit that is different?

Awesome fig Jon!  I had one labeled Black Jack and was looking forward to some figs this year.  Well, it turned out to be Celeste.  But those figs were good.  Oh well, I am glad to here Black Jack is one fine fig tree.  I'm going to have to get me one some day.  cheers, Dennis

Dennis, I have a couple of Black Jack, had good success with two twigs a fellow fig lover provided.  I may want to wager a swap with you, didn't you have good success with Hardy Chicago?  Would be happy to trade.

Hi Jason.  I have some really nice Hardy Chicagos from cuttings I got from Herman (thank you Herman).  Let me know if you need one Jason.

Best wishes.

One of the "problem" with figs is that they are very responsive to their environment (soil, water, fertilizer, climate, amount of sun, breed of dog next door, etc.) so they can look very different at two different locations. All of the pix I take at Figs 4 Fun are what they look like at that location. "You're results may vary, details in store". When I did a blind test with Sybil of Paradise Nursery (now closed), she did not even recognize the figs she had sold me, because they looked that much different. Welcome to the "fun" in figs.

Yes Jason, let's trade!  I have a couple of Hardy Chicago cuttings I can send you, plus since your being so nice I'll send you a couple of my Sweet "Green Turkey" cuttings as a gift.  Email me at snaglpus@inbox.com.  thank you and cheers, Dennis

Very good point Jon!  I had a Brunswick in a large container for 2 years, the tree was 2 years old.  Now, I was a newbie to figs and for 2 years that tree would split figs badly!  The figs had no taste.  So, I got mad and planted that tree on my hill this Spring.  Well, it did not grow much but it did produce 3 large odd shaped figs.  The first one I picked had the texture of a semi-ripe firm plum and man was it sweet and rich.  I almost cried!  I could not believe that tree produced such an awesome fig.  The second fig was the same!  The third fig was distroyed by this giant squirrel.  But he won't be around my neighbourhood for a while.  He left my deck with a limp!  He is somewhere dressing his wounds!  My point is figs taste so much different once the soil, climate, temperature etc changes and managed differently.  cheers, Dennis
