Madeira best in our yard here near Chicago .
Good luck with yours.

O Martin they look so good. I will take real good care of these. They are my babies.
Thanks to the kind member.

Martin, how many years does it take to get a plate like that. very nice.

Just to give you a reminder of the essential unchangingness of what the good figs are, I was leafing through my old catalogs the other day, and in the Pacific Tree Farms catalog, '97-'99 or thereabouts, they were selling Black Madeira.  When it comes to figs, it is very hard to best the oldies but goodies when it comes to a wide range of growing circumstances.  Dat dere Kadota is one of the oldest variety of any fruit and it's still going strong, commercially.

Shah - here is picture from 2010 it came back from winter dormancy that year as it died to ground level in the fig shuffle and that dead branch was cut and the new branch you see was trained and topped in 2011 at about 42 inches and i saved a few figs to taste.
Last seaon here is plant with many figs and were best in yard .

With it up against the fence like that, don't you feel threatened by all the potential two legged thieves out there?  ?:~)

Martin, do you leave your Madeira plant in ground sir? I am curious as to how cold it could get without significant dieback. Many thanks

Donald

Shah - Butch that 120# in my avatar used to guard against that, now me and 2 that i have left do so.
Cheah not sure i do not grow this 1 inground .
Thanks for the compliment Noss .  ;  )

Martin,

That is a lovely looking plant. When you say "died back to ground" do you mean that it was in ground at that time, or that it died back to soil level in a container?

Wow, Martin.  I don't think it could look more vigorous!  That's a healthy looking tree.

Martin, do you grow Figo Preto also?  I'm curious if you have had a chance to compare it to Black Madeira in terms of growth, taste, etc.  I'm rooting both but have the impression from posts on the forum that Figo Preto is essentially the same variety but grows somewhat more vigorously.  Thanks.

I am also trying Black Madeira in New York. Saratoga Springs Zone 5. They are just starting to root now, and will eventually be grown in pots on my driveway.

Dale in large container.
Rewton - i did have preto and it looked the same but never came out of dormancy and was dead i think the same year as the madeira had its problems if memory serves me right.

Although leaves on fig plants can look alike they can be different just to bad i did not get chance to taste preto figs to compare.

Here's an updated photo of my Black Madeira cuttings. They're starting to come along nice now.

So far in 2013, my Black Madeira has put on more growth than all of 2012.... and it's still not too much.

Scot, good luck with your cutting. They look like they are in good health and growing well..
Jame, mine are not doing much, just staying green.

when i first came to this forum, BM was known to be a hard to root variety. it seems rooting technique has been improved since. one thing i noticed about BM is, they response well to heat and fertilizer.
