Black Madeira and Fico Preto Comparison

I took a video last night to compare Black Madeira and Fico Preto.  I am pretty certain they are the same fig, however, for whatever reason they seem to be reacting differently in my greenhouse.  It could be that one is older, larger pot, closed self water pot vs open, not exactly sure.  When ripening outside in full sun, they are indistinguishable.

Great video as usual johnny.thank you for the comparison.

Hi Nick,

When was the ripening date? Was the Preto much earlier or about the same?

Enjoyed your video. Thanks

I have a preto and a BM so naturally my interest was peaked.

Great video Nick.I agree with you that for fresh eating these are better before they turn into a "bag of jam",
texture is important to me.When they get to the point of ripeness that your Preto showed I split them and
dehydrate them. When fully dehydrated they get a "sugar glaze" that is visually stunning.
At 13:12 of your video,on the growing tip, we can see just how tight the nodes on the Preto can be.Imagine every one of those
putting on figs.
Very nice looking tree's.

Cheers

Excellent video, Nick.  Very helpful.  I only have the Preto but I hear all the time that BM may be the same, so I never sought a BM out.  My Pretos love the SIP and produce clusters of figs at the tips just like yours.
How often are you root pruning your 30 gallon pots?

The first Black Madeira was a few weeks ahead of the Preto this year. It is also a much larger tree with 3x the figs.

I will probably do some side pruning this fall. I find my 5g SWPs need pruning every other year max and I believe some of my 3yr 30g SWPs showed the need for pruning this year. They are nearly impossible to get the trees out of however, so my sawzall and I have different plans this year!

Great video, thanks for sharing it. Your trees are awesome.

I root pruned a few 3 gallon pots with a cheap sharp machete and it worked really well.  The cuts were nice and smooth.  I am going to try it on my 5 gallon SIPs this winter.

Frank did you just use the machete like a knife sawing through a steak?  For some reason, I have a mental picture of you whacking at the root mass like Rambo going through a forest!

Ha!  As much as I'd love to go ninja on it, I sliced it like a big loaf of bread.  :)
