That's one heck of a tree. Looks super healthy and a perfect shape. I agree with you about removing some of the figs. I would rather have few great figs and a healthy tree then a dead tree. I don't know what your doing, but I know it's gotta be right.

Made out pretty well, only lost a few. The jersey joes fig trees are growing like crazy. So glad I made the trip. Is that the name you gave them? One to make sure I get it right. I have to say, when I look at the pics you take of your trees it's actually looks like their not real. What I mean is, their perfect. You do nice work.

Noss, riot wraps are those whoite plastic strips that cops use when they run out of cuff links. You can get them in a variety of sizes and colors at most hardware stores.

Luke, I think I will keep my tree in its pot. I have a smaller BM in a pot. If get the nerve....I place it in the ground. BMs don't get that big based on the ones I've seen at UCD.

I have almost totally different varieties. One sunshine blue, and the rest different. Misty, sharpblue, Oneal (going to get rid of - too warm here), Emerald, Jewel, Biloxi, Abundance, Southmoon, star -- several of each.  And I finally have 'enough' of them - both plants and fruits. I freeze, dry, make leathers, ...and graze a lot.

We should star a separate blueberry thread. :)

Joe, To be honest I'm not sure if I have a  Black Madeira or not? I went crazy buying cuttings and my head is spinning in circles. Don't get me wrong, I've got everything labeled and have notes all piled in my desk with who and where they came from. Just have to get more organized. Need to take a few computer classes so I can learn how to use it. I've tried to paste but it destroys the key board. Go figure.

A trip down memory lane Bump.

I had 1/2 of my essay written in my head before I realized this post was started in 2008....lol.  I got all excited for nothing....but at least I had a good laugh at myself over it..  =)

Martin, thanks for bumping this thread. I have a young Black Madeira (and Figo Preto) and the information about this variety looking healthy with lots of figs and then committing suicide was an eye opener!

Just a comment on Black Madeira in the Southeast and rooting BM cuttings. This is a great fig here, ripens late and misses a lot of the rain. Superb taste, productive, and dependable.
 I have not found it hard to root cuttings from this fig. I probably have 8 or 9 from cuttings this spring and only 2 or 3 cuttings that didn't root. No suicide here (so far).

Scott made it happen via trade October 2008.
Scott tree is doing well and produces figs here that are best in yard.

Martin, I'm just now beginning to figure out which ones are most desirable.  I found one and traded it to another member at the first of the month.  I had no idea how popular it is but she has promised me cuttings from it when it's big enough so I am looking forward to having my own next year.  =)

That was a good trade for me, too, Martin. Sal's EL -among others-I'm eating one now.

It was that Black Madeira that made me get rid of many plants including finally the Sals EL as i made a extra Madeira now in big container and making the figs that i keep knocking off but next season should be good eaten with 2 of them.  ; )
