I took half a stick of Black Madeira and grafted it (growing okay) and here is the top half of the stick, 26 days after I started rooting it.



It is now potted up and is going into my greenhouse.

Black Madeira has a reputation for being slow or difficult to root and I failed when I tried once before 4-5 years ago, but this little cutting rooted pretty average compared to the 30 or so varieties I started around the same time.  The other half of this cutting got grafted onto a Brown Turkey so I'm hoping to compare growth between the two.  The BT graft has two buds with tiny leaves emerging.

I'm not sure why it has that reputation.  After years of trying, I successfully grew a BM tree from cutting at the beginning of 2012.  Already the buds have started swelling on the two limbs it grew last year.  One of the limbs is 1" long the other is a whopping 3/4" long.  It better be as awesome as everyone says!  LOL

Thanks for the encouragement to persevere with this tree, Martin.  If this thing continues to grow as slowly as it is, I might try grafting a cutting onto a more vigorous root stock next year.

Yes, I did use score marks extensively this season and am very pleased with the results.

I am rooting cuttings in Jon's alternative method, the 3" x 7" bags, using 90% perlite and 10% sphagnum peat moss, set on a tub on a propagation mat set to 85F.  This allows me to get a lot of cuttings started in a pretty small space.  Before they get very root bound, I have potted them up and moved them into my greenhouse which gets down into the low 40s at night and up to 90 at day.  I used 1 gallon pots until I ran out and now using my 4" wide by 12" deep treepots from Stuewe, using the Miracle Grow potting mix (it's worked okay in the past and Costco has large bags of it for $9.99).
