Black Madeira Fig Video Review

Awesome video Joe, and awesome tree!

Now I understand why everyone wants one! Once again, great informative video. Has me wondering about splitting here in the humid rainy southeast.

kind of hard to watch all the smacking and smashing of the fruit. but still informative. cutting with a knife really shows off the fruit. hope that helps thanks for the video.

Thank you for sharing your video, FrozenJoe.  I see bags that you placed on your figs for protection. Where do you get them ? So far I have not seen them for sale anywhere . I really need to protect my precious fruits too from birds that keep pecking on them...it is very upseting since  I am not ready to share yet :) Thank you

Nice video and a very good variety.
One may safely say that Black Madeira aka Violeta, is a fig for all climates... 5 to 11 !!

My neighbor Jeremiahs will be pruning his old Violetas next February and needs help to clean all that wood.. a ton of cuttings !!

Katerina, they're called organza bags. You can get them off Amazon and I've even seem them at Walmart.

Great video, now I know what to look forward to in a year or two!

Do the organza bags cause any negative effects at all?  Does it filter the sun too much?  And at what point do you start placing bags on the figs?

Great video, Joe!!!

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Those are organza bags.  I use 4X5 inch bags.  You can find them online or at local stores that sell craft supplies.  Online I am able to get 100 bags for $4.99 with free shipping.  The bags don't seem to affect the figs at all.  They ripen up normally.  Maybe in a very rainy climate you might have problems with the bags staying wet and encouraging mold?  Rain is infrequent enough here that it is not an issue.  I place a bag on a fig as soon as the fig starts to swell up and turn color.  You just put the bag over the fig and pull the draw strings tight at the fig's stem.  That's it.  It's very simple.  When it is time to harvest the figs I pull the fruit and bag off as one and then remove the fig from the bag.  4X5 works well for all of my figs.  But in a moister climate where the figs might swell up larger perhaps you would need a larger size.

Thank you so much for great info. I am going to look for them and dress up my figs later :)

I still do not see why there is an overwhelming attraction for this fig.
We have Battagglia and Negronne which are supposed to be some of the best. I would really like to grow all three to try them back to back.

Nice vid btw Joe

Very nice Joe! Always look forward to your videos. I second the use of a knife though! Or you could just use your tongue and make sound effects like that one weird Dude did on his video. That would be really cool;)

Just added another to my WishList! Hopefully one of these years I will get one. A little worried about the splitting here in Central Texas though. Any fellow Texans grow it? How well does it perform here? Looks like an outstanding producer :)

Thanks for the video. Very informative!

Thanks for the additional comments!

I will try to remember the knife for future videos.

Wow, Francisco, need any help disposing of those cuttings by any chance? :)

Igor,

Thank you for your availability.
I shall see him soon and ask how does he feel about getting some extra help.

Thanks, again, Joe.  Since you're shooting your videos yourself and handling the fig with just one hand, using a knife may be difficult (but not impossible).  Perhaps biting a fruit open will show the fruit a bit better.  I've done that some of the time simply because I only thought of taking a photo after I had taken a bite and they came out okay.

Thanks for explaining your organza process, Joe!  Take care.

Hi lampo,
I can help as well :)

Yeah! I've been waiting for this fig review.  Another awesome video, Joe.  Mahalo.

Well, I have to say a nice clean cut does really show off a fig the best, that's the only way the syrup can be appreciated by viewer. You could always just set the camera down for a second, I know I wouldn't mind that. As far as eating it, well that's how we know how good it is!

I do want to thank you for taking the time to make these videos though.  I'm sure you probably haveto get up early in the morning when it's still just hot out. Versus going out into the Phoenix blast furnace during the day.

Thanks guys.

Here is a dead ripe Black Madeira fig from today.  This fig is juicy inside.  Sometimes honey spills out of the eye.  The flavor is sweet and strong.  It has a rich, syrupy complexity.  It is one of the best.
