Black Madeira in the humid south

Finally got my hands on a BM. Really excited about it but want to hear anyone elses expirence whos grown this variety with in 25 miles of the Gulf Coast. Ive got the long hot summers plus the humidity and rain. Some years much more than others! Thanks in advance for any info that you can share. Also if anyone is interested in trading send me a PM. Really looking for JH Adriatic. Been out bid 5 times so far at the last minute on Ebay. Very frustrating!!!!!!!!

Hi, i'm also interested to know the fruit quality in tropical area.  I have 4 healthy BM bought from Portugal 5 months ago.  The grow is awesome and all has fruits (not ripe yet).

I don't have much experience with black Madeira but I did buy one from KK during the summer and it arrived with 3 green figs. I live about 15 miles from the gulf coast in south east Louisiana. Those 3 figs hung on for quite a while but they did ripen and where very good. They each had a drop of honey at the eye and none of them split or soured. I can't wait till this coming season after it is in ground so I can pass real judgement.

My BM tree isn't big enough to produce fruit yet. But I have had Preto ripen here in KY. I realize the heat and humidity isn't quite the same here as what you get but we do get a fair amount of both. Some years we get a lot of rain, other summers temps are over 100F and very dry.

Although I have no experience with BM yet, my Preto has produced some excellent, fully ripe, fruits that didn't spoil here. It's been said to be almost identical in fruit quality as the BM. The flavor is beyond compare.

I wish you the best with your Black Madiera there in SE. TX.

Thanks for the info. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. The drop of honey in the eye means a lot when growing were I am.

Black Madeira is reasonably flexible in terms of making good fruit.  One person has not had great success on the gulf coast in ground, but that's just one.
