Wow what a generous gift.I wish I had time to pick up that beauty.
You may regret that after i show you some pictures later this season as our climates are are very similar or you do not like the taste of the figs.
Wow! The only good reason to be near Cleveland I've ever heard. I'll have to scheme some way to get there...
I also got a couple of ripe fruits last year, and I see it is possible in my climate. It is a late cultivar tho,and in some Summer it might not get ripe, and if it happen it is not the tree Fall it is my climate. They are very dark deep red inside like no other fig I have seen.I am sure if ripe properly it is the top of the top, when about taste and flavor.I am sure it will do much better getting ripe in the deep south of USA.
Noss all i say is as my tree matures even though it died back to ground its second season and this now its forth should be 1 month earlier than last season as tree gets more mature and adjusts its crop. What i mean by adjust its crop for instance some of my young plants when they first bear the first time the figs come out later than normal and in following season or two they adjust come out earlier , ive seen this quite a lot over the years.I do cheat as i grow in containers. Its often mentioned that madeira and panache are long season figs but i feel in containers its very do able here near Chicago and the heat they need is there for them just has to be claimed in certain ways - early awaken , grown in pots, placed in full sun on hot surfaced which i do with all my fig plants. ; )I feel i can enjoy them counting days September 15th will be there 90th day counting ones i see this very day today so in a week or two i stop them from multiplying.Last season a very nice season indeed for the fig trees overall in yard my Madeira ripened first fig October 12th and that was not pruning any tips nor pruning off any figs for i let it grow wild to get some nice growth. So it proves to me in a season i can have figs from this plant and they can taste excellent cause i give them all the heat they need cause i cheat mother nature.Another forum member not far from me did similar with his Madeira tree and his figs looked as nice and he mention his figs tasted different than any other fig he tasted before in a good way.
That's only an 8 hour ride to cleveland,Ohio for me. Marius, your gone a have to sweetin the offer a little bit more to get me out there. One Black Madeira won't put me behind the wheel for 16 hours total. I'm tempted..luke
I could fly there from California to pick it up, but the airline would probably make me buy the fig a ticket for it's own seat for the return flight. :)
Gina,That would be a great idea.Show them how dedicated you are with your figs. Buy an extra ticket for it and time and other expenses.Only to have the California agriculture department take it away from you. LOLSo close but no cigar. LOL
You could still use it to sell cuttings from as an excuse to keep it.
Hey Gina, I did that last year! Flew to Houston, found 4 BEAUTIFUL Italian Black fig trees that were 5 feet tall. I tried to take them on the plane and was told they were too tall. This was after I cut the trees back to fit inside a 12 inch tube!. I called my nephew. He came and got the tree until I came back in March. March came and drove to Houston and picked them up along with 14 other trees! If I was a couple of miles from Cleveland, I would have been there by now! But KK sold me his tree and it did fruit last year for me so, I am happy....for now.
