Black Madeira root graft

I dared cut the stick in half, so the cutting was very small, I grafted roots on the top portion, and cupped it in a week.  The tip portion did much better,  but this bottom part has been too slow and I had doubts it would make, no signs of roots to come, so I grafted a bigger piece of root and waited, so today, it showed it is going to make it.

Tomorrow I want to plant it in  a larger pot directly, I am not too happy about transplanting them from the cups...

Here are the pictures. Enjoy!

Nice work Grasa.

Thank you for showing us your root graft. I have toyed with the idea. What variety of root did you use? Also, I hope it results in a hardier, more vigorous Black Madeira for you.

I don't know what my root is, I have a vigorous 22 y. old that lives happy and unprotected out there...so i am stealing its roots to get others going.  Crossing my fings, only time will tell if this works, but it is fun for now.

Very interesting Grasa !

WHAT ZONE are you in ?

I believe is 8b, not sure.  I wish it was warmer here.. we are under a huge grey cloud again, today!

Hey Grasa, I am impressed with your success and Jennifer's success grafting roots onto cuttings.  Can one or both of you video how its done?  I'd hate to go through a dozen cuttings trying this and not doing it right.

thanks!

Ok....never mind. I can do it! I have an idea though. I'll experiment with LSU Purple or Brown Turkey root stock with 1 UCD Black Ischia and 1 Black Maderia and see what happens. I got 2 Black Ischias and already inside my garage, it has doubled in length. But I got 1 cutting each of BI and BM from UCD that I can play with. I'll post some pics later this Spring.

Thanks,

Youtube VIDEOS. Cool beans! Can't wait to see it. Lol.

Dennis, I canot garantee the success yet. I was attacked by gnats..so, it is the root graft or the gnats? I will try again this summer. or after I get rid of these nasty creatures. My rate of success can only be verified after the potting process, and with root graft or not, I am still struggling to keep them alive after move from cup to pots.   Challenges!

I'm going straight to 70% perlite, 20%vermiticulite, and pinch of compost, lime, and bark fines.

Orchid soil works for me too but I add a lot of coarse perlite

Ah, Grasa...you are up to your "magic" again...nice job, keep up the good work.
