Black Madeira -Stunting

Here's my stunted black madeira.   I've got three of them all with the same problem.   Cuttings came from USDA.  Most other variety of cuttings started from the same time this year are from 3 ft - 8 feet tall, but not this.   This is a strange one.   It may have grown maybe one or two inches max and only about 5-6 inches tall total.   For that small a plant, there are lots of small leaves, maybe 15 small leaves on the plant.  Hopefully, next year it will have a growth spurt.

I am still new...but love to throw my 2 cents....LOL   I think your answer will come in tomorrow when more members are online.......I think it looks healthy which is the best part.....I got one to start growing again by pouring cool coffee and it started back up......I would also maybe take off a few leaves...that may get the roots to want to pump more stuff through its veins......   I may be completely wrong, and I am OK with it......I am a newbie now for about 3 years...LOL     Note: I watered it with coffee 2 times then stopped.

The way the leaves are curled, it appears to be under some type of stress.  Possibly insect or bacterial related?

It looks like it has a case of FMV. But it's alive and does not look too bad. Do not remove leaves - each green leaf is like a solar panel that changes sunlight into carbs the plant then uses for growth. The more the better.

Wait until next year then keep it well fertilized. I believe that's how many encourage figs with bad FMV to grow out of it.

Good luck.

Definitely FMV.
My experience with both my original UCD Black Madeira cuttings and then those from my mama tree was
(a) rather very hard to root.
(b) once rooted; growth is veeery slooow (b/c of stress induced FMV).

The good news is that after a while they do snap-out-of-it, with some help by a 1/2 doze MG food regimen.

Yes, new rootings are stunned (growth); but once one get the fruit, it is stunning (looks/taste).

You think BM is bad; try your luck with the UCD Ischia Black!!!

Note:
A (rather silent) F4F member seems to have a better strain, as I often see him cranking nice Blk. Mad. rootings on ebay...

Good information, thanks for sharing.

Best,

I agree with George.  The leaves look good, but with typical FMV from UCD.  The one I received last year from them rooted slowly and grew very slowly, but they tend to push through it, I up pot them sooner than later to develop the root system and use rich soil mixture and large grow bags

FMV, I had/have a cutting of VdB and CdD from UCD that look just like your BM.

Overwinter it in a greenhouse or indoors, and push it with fertilizer. They are always slow to get started.

What Jon said push with fertilizer -miracle grow 24.8.16 is what i use on a regular basis in 2nd season it should grow well.
I can attest to that.

Ok I will try one with mg fertilizer and 2 without next spring time. I have no greenhouse, so maybe an overturned tub will have to do for winter.
