I have several strains of Black Madeiras.
The Black Madeira from UCD (so far) bears smaller figs than the Preto.
They are not the same as far as growth habit is concerned.
The Black Madeira UCD will eventually shake off its FMV symptoms but needs lots of sun and heat, but is a slower grower than the Preto or the larger Black Madeira.
If you are in Zone 8b and above, any black Madeira will ripen its fruit, but might be vulnerable to winter freezes. If in ground it will take several years to get established. I leave mine unprotected in winter and lose lots of wood each season. This past winter, both the Preto and Black Madeira UCD died to the ground but came back nicely.
Being in different soil, it's hard to compare the two, but the Preto as of yesterday already grew 5ft 5" from soil level, while the Black Madeira's all new highest shoot, grew about 2ft 3".
Today, I could count 10 figs on my small Black Madeira tree, while the Preto has only a couple, and busy getting taller.
As far as flavor is concerned, it is difficult to compare the two young trees, as they are awefully close.
