Black Madiera

I finally picked a fully ripe fig of the Black Madiera. WOW This fig really has a distinctive flavor when fully ripe. My tree is still young, I only got 2 figs from it. Earlier in September I picked one that was under ripe, this time the fig was fully ripe and fill off the tree.

Bass i know its hard to tell eating just one ripe fig for the season as this happened to me also from my italian unknown that gave me 1st ripe in its 3rd year of growing, but the taste was it berry overtones or very sweet or melon tasting, just curious. For me it was the sweetness that i recall the most.
Also is tree in ground or in pot and how was its growth habit this year.

This tree is grown in a container. I'm not sure if anyone on the east coast has in in the ground. It seems to be a late fig, so container growth might be essential, unless someone has experimented with it in ground.

Martin,

It is not berry flavored. There is something unique about it. When you taste one, you know it becuase it is not like anything else. It also has (I don't know how else to describe it) two or three layers of flavor, which do not all happen simultaneously, as well as a very full richness to the flavor. The IDEA is like a spiced cider, or some such thing. There is a base flavor (the cider), and then some additional flavors (the spices), which blend, but also maintain some distinctness at the same time. Maybe it would make sense to say that the flavor is three-dimensional.

Black Weeping, Cilentano and St. Jerome have some of this same compexity and layering.

I guess the flavor takes you back to when you were a little kid. To me it reminded me of a dried fig dipped in chocolate.

Guys, this is late Oct & I am surviving on bottle figs(jam). Please keep such chat/descriptive info on specific varieties BUZZING. It sure helps to keep the fall & winter gloom away. I just can't wait for the next season to start. Maybe I should consider dual citizenship -- here I come Aussie land? Hope my favourite supplier gets my message.

Hi Paully22
It will cost you less to maintain a good greenhouse in B.C. for winter fruiting figs plus a walk-in fridge to dupe these winter-fruiting set of fig that it is Australian winter for dormancy period, than going there. Also, the greenhouse will expedite your summer crop too.
Sorry, back to Black Madiera ....................

I went to Australia last year. My uncle has too many problems with growing figs, such as fruit fly, fruit bats, and birds.
I have family in 2 different islands in the Caribbean, so I went there couple years ago and I planted a Panache in Antigua. It bears a couple figs or so every week non stop. I also planted 2 different fig trees in Trinidad and they're also doing well.

I had a couple of Black Madiera figs ripen "naturally" last year. Tasted very
good!  Had a few more unripened figlets on the tree which was placed in
a GH; but then the fruit split/tasted like cardboard. Bottom line, BM is a
LATE good fig; most probably better suited for warmer regions...

Then later, after butchering my mother BM tree (last year, for cuttings),
as of today it has about 5 figlets (~1" dia) that are beyond any hope
(of ripening).
