Well i posted earlier all my figs are done for season but noticedmy first season Mission plant that had earlier put out a few late figs 2 have decided to start and ripen here "slowly" in the cool weather we are having. Now i have eaten mission figs before in Florida and curious how these will taste at this time of year now that the weather has changed. Right now very pretty color on them.If its worth it i will post picture when time comes for those curious as well.On another note i brought in a several 1st season plants last night including a small rooted Ronde im shipping to a fig nut Tomorrow ; ), when i came home from Mich trip temps at midnight were at the 40 mark and today high will be 56.Tonights forcastMostly clear. Patchy frost after midnight. Lows in the upper 30s. North winds around 10 mph in the evening becoming light and variable after midnight .Tonight patchy frost warnings.
I am curious too, If they will be sweet as suppose to in New Jersey?Any one growing them? Went through Ebay - a lot of them for sale...
Hi Mat,growing in containers has some advantages for added heat if there kept on warm surface other that grass and a little head start in spring over inground trees in same type of climate. To me mission fig should not be overpowering in the sweet catagory but a balanced blend of rich fig taste and sweetness. Least i hope my Monrovia Mission type turns out like this. The fig i talked about in first post i dont expect much of because we had 2 patchy frosts already .
I'm in CT, zone 6. My first year Mission had 12 good size figs and they were all delicious. And yes, they were sweet. Just perfect. I ate the last one last week. I couldn't have been more please with it.Peg
