Black Mission Fig in California.

I was for a trip to Los Angeles area past weekend.  I walked into a Lowe's store in Burbank just to see what they carry in terms of fruit trees.

I found Brown Turkey and Black Mission fig are the only 2 fig trees.  I have Black Mission here in DFW area - they are not riping yet - but as a figlet - they stay green.  The Black Mission in Lowes about 4 feet tall tree - has few figs and even the small figlets are somewhat dark - seems they will be black even before riping.

I was able to take a photo of the tag - but my cheapo smart phone camera couldn't focus clearly on the figlets.  Thus - I am only posting photo of the tag.

Is Black Mission fig supposed to be black/dark from the get go?   I asked the manager if I can take a small cutting and he agreed.  I will try to root it here in Texas.

On a separate note- I spotted 3 fig tree while driving around LA.  I wish I could stop by and inspect those closer.  They are big trees.   And, also in Los Angeles County Arboretum - I found a Panache (Tiger) fig - it was loaded with fruits - some are bigger than a golf ball.  Unfortunate - it's not riping season yet.

Thank you. [125ke0y]

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will answer your main question!   There are a ton of figs growing in SoCal and a couple of different neighbors each have a fig tree.  There are some other giant specimens just within a mile or two of my house. In the fall I will have to stop by and ask for cuttings!  Most nurseries here carry several varieties as most tend to do well down here.  Best of luck rooting your cutting.

I bought a black Mission fig tree from Lowe's this spring with four main trunks about 4' tall.  It is bearing about 12 figs small and large, none of them are black/dark from the get go.  a couple of them dropped, an one medium sized fig turned  purple recently, with one large one still green.

The young figs on my Black Mission are still mostly green but I have the tree in afternoon shade. The more sun the figs get, the darker many of the black figs turn, such as Violette de Bordeaux. Other black figs such as LSU Purple wait until they are getting ripe to turn black.
It's hard to find more than those two varieties in a selection of fig trees in the Los Angeles nurseries and chain stores. People think that's all there is, try the unripe figs in the stores, and choosed to dislike figs. But there are a lot of fig trees around since they grow wild here and are spread by the birds.

They stay green right until they ripen

Sounds like a VdB...

Thank you all who responded to this post - I appreciate it.

All the figs that I have seen - Celeste, Brown-Turkey, Alma, etc - start as a green figlet and once they grow to full size - they start changing colors when ripening.  This Black Mission is unusual because the small figlets were already dark color and I noticed even the ones hiding under the leaves were dark too.  So, I don't think it's sun burn issue.

I got VdB cuttings from USDA and the leaves are not the same as this Black Mission.  The cutting I took - has no fruit on it.  If I got to root it - surely it will be a pleasure.
