"Black Mission"...information, please.

I'm thinking about adding this variety to my small collection of figs.  I can't find anything about splitting/souring....closed/open eye....breba...late main-crop, or, early main-crop.

I pretty sure, from what forum members have posted, that this variety will "work" in NYC/Zone-7b, with protection.

Should I seek out ...beg, borrow, or, steal, any special strains?  If yes, who's selling?

Just asking...if anyone's going to know, it's this forum.

Frank,
From what I have read on the forum Vista & NL from Jon are excellent varieties of mission
 Pete

PHD...

Thanks.  I've read that "Vista" / "Vista Mission" = "Violette de Bordeaux", and the "Black Mission"-NL has FMV.

Frank

Those you named are related.

There are several variants of black mission, as I'm sure you've found. I have one nearby to me that splits in rain and sours eventually. Not a good choice. I sent cuttings to te west coast and it doesn't split and sour in their climate. Go figure? That said, I would e sure to get opinions from both coasts where possible...

PS - Jon says that Vista is definitely in its own league (possibly variety), and is superior to all.

PSS - I think genetic testing at UCD showed genetic link between VdB, Black mission, Black Jack, Brown Turkey and a few others - ill need to go back and look again (will try this morning).

Nothing's ever easy, is it?  Is there such a thing as a good, East-Coast strain?  Who retails it?  I would like to buy a fruiting-size tree.  Are all of them splitters?

I'm wondering if I should even bother seeking out a good version of this fig.  I have a nice size "Kathleen's Black" fig that will start producing within a few seasons, maybe even next year.  Could a "Black Mission" be any better?

Thanks for the opinions and help.

Frank

Black Mission,is similar to Kathleen black, but about one third smaller in size.
First Pix:Mission,second Kathleen Black.
Both are delicious if properly ripe, and coming from mature trees.

Thank-you for helping me make up my mind.  I will not loose sleep trying to get a good "Black Mission".  I actually forgot that I already have 7 tiny  "Black Mission" treelets from virus-free tissue culture.  My mind is shot.  I remember nothing.

My "Kathleen's Black" will be one of the dark jewels in my fig crown, along with "Dark Portuguese"...Marseilles Black"-VS...et al.

MARTIN....NOTICE ALL THE DARK FIGS CREEPING INTO MY COLLECTION....."The darker the meat........"

Vasile...Many thanks for the trees, and for the very informative photos.  Can't wait for the taste test.

Frank

Frank,

I have several small first year trees if you are unable to obtain one come spring time I can send you one.

Chris...

Thank-you so much for extending your gesture of kindness and friendship.  I will contact you if/when the time comes.  Again, many, many thanks.

Frank

Some Black Missions are Violette de Bordeaux. Not really, BUT I have had enough "Black Mission" cuttings from scion exchanges that have turned out to be VdB, so there are people out there that have VdB and think they have Black Mission. They share (probably unknowingly) and so the misconception spreads.

Frank,

No problem. We all pay it forward one way or another.
