Black Mission NL

First taste from this tree--delicious. The original 1-gallon came from Encanto around thanksgiving 2009 and went into the ground this spring. A low branch developed into a second leader, which I air layered and repotted several weeks ago; it produced the ripe fruit, with another fig right behind in a day or three. This one is already juicier and tastier than my "regular" Black Mission which has been in the ground for 8-10 years.


For some reason, I'm seeing that my potted figs seem a little quicker to fruit than the in-grounds, but am not sure why. Anybody else noticed this?

I have a small one of these. Can't wait to taste it next year. Thanks for posting pics.

Added stress = more fruiting. This is a genetic response. If a plant thinks it will die, it will fruit in order to spread seed, trying to continue its genetics.

Ken, Let it get a little riper, and it will be like jam. In your dry heat, it should almost dehydrate on the tree.

Congrats Ken. It is always better to have another quality variant. I am finding this a good thing to have as I can start discarding variants that are less tasty & focus on the best for my zone.

It is reported the root bounding in pots make the fig produce earlier. However fig grown in-ground produces more figs, bigger fig and tastier. Flip side is winter protection for in-ground figs.
