Black No. 1 from Pakistan

This fig is mentioned at  http://figs4fun.com/Varieties.html
As mentioned there, it is named Black though it is not black in colour but seems interesting. Is any one growing this cultivation variety to tell more about it like growing habit, size, taste etc ?

I have one, but it has not been very vigorous. Fruit is definitely no "Black" as advertised by the name.

Black No. 1 is a good grower for me.  The fruit is blackish brown w/ red interior much like Osborne Prolific. It sets a very large breba crop of good flavor and size.  The main crop is often too late to ripen but is good if it does. I consider it one of the better figs  that I grow.

There is a liquid product called, GSE, or grapefruit seed extract.  It's supposedly a virus killer for people.  I am wondering if it would kill the FMV if used to water the fig trees that are affected.

The site I got mine from will not instruct you how to do any of these things, but the person told me to try organic nurseries and health food stores to see if they have any brochures that talk about using GSE for plants.

I haven't done so yet, but I have a couple of figs that have FMV and am interested in trying it.  We don't have any organic nurseries around here that I know of.

If anyone has used GSE with plants, please let me know?

Thanks,

noss

I have not, but I will share this, Viv.

I had strep, full-on, while in college.  I was interested in a young woman at the time, who was ... let's say, a little "boheme" ... and she, all fear aside, had me eat some raw grapefruit peel, about 1/4 of a full ruby-red, and the next day i rebounded like you wouldn't believe.

That incident sort of changed my view of the power of citrus fruit.  I wouldn't doubt if GSE could impact GSE.  It's this kind of creative idea that always piques my interest.  I usually expect these wild ideas to come from Martin :)

It should help some to know that consumption of grapefruit & peel usage makes some of the blood pressure medication less effective and this effect is temporary for the time when the grapefruit has been used. That is what I was told by the pharmacist and the medication accompanying literature.

....Back to the figs.

St. John's wort, Cedar and many other herbs have antiviral properties. Here's a link that might be helpful ....

There's an organic orchardist in the northeast who uses plant medicine for plants. This man, Michael Phillips, wrote a book called "The Organic Apple Grower". I hope people start doing some experiments with this stuff. I'm really curious to see how it works on the figs.

You have to be careful when taking blood pressure meds and cholesterol drugs and not eat grapefruit.  I wouldn't take GSE, either.  It doesn't affect all BP/cholesterol meds, but if you are on those it does affect, it can destroy your liver.

I'm talking giving it to FMV positive FIG trees when they're little to see if it makes a difference.

GSE is said to kill viruses and I think it might just do that, but who knows.  Was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with it.  If I can find a correct mixture of GSE/water, I will definitely try it.

If it can be fed in the water, to the plant, the plant will take it up in the water.  It would be great if something that simple would kill FMV, but not counting on it.
