I bought cuttings of what was sold as Black Ischia from Richard Watts, because he believed it to be a synonym of what he bought it as, Black Provence. It has been discussed here, and has been determined it is not Black Ischia, but is indeed Black Provence. It is a beautiful plant with lots of red in the stem and petioles, with deeply lobed leaves similar to VdB. I know Genecolin has had his plant produce figs, but they weren't at thier best I don't think. Are there any new reports to share from anyone growing this plant? How about you Gene? My plant only has small figs forming, a few of the earlier ones dropped. I hope I will get to try it this year, I can't say enough about how attractive this fig tree is.

f4f says that b/provinnce is a syn. for b/ ischia  and hence the same fig

Thanks aaa. I don't think they are the same, different leaf shape and the Black Provence has an amber center, the Black Ischia has a red center. Maybe the BI has been called BP, but the tree from RW is not the same as the confirmed BI grown by members here. The BI has FMV, my BP doesn't seem to show it.

When I took pictures, I noticed the stem had a reddish cast, not really "red". The petioles are red, and young new growth is also red, also a red eye on the small figs

Mike I had two small figs on my BP. They didn't look like they were ripening correctly. Although they got real dark the skins were tough and dry. I cut one open to taste and it had little flavor. I will cut the other in the next day or two and try to remember to post pictures. My tree is in a pot.

Gene, I hope properly matured figs in good conditions will have a good taste. I have plenty of little figs, so hopefully we will both get to taste them. Let us know when you eat a good one.

The varietals section here at f4f describes Black Provence as a French variety, a little smaller than medium sized. It has black to brown skin, red flesh, is tender, very sweet and lucious. It ripens early and bears prolifically. Photos from Encanto show a red to amber interior. I believe this accession is from Richard Watts, the source of my plant, and Gene's also.

My black ishcia AD that I got from Rafed sure does look like the pics Greg posted in #7.  I'm guessing black ischia AD that Jon has is the same as Black Provence from Richard Watts.

Interesting. My Blue Ischia leaves are very different. Of cause nobody knows what the Blue Ischia is ...

aaa, Jon (pitangadiego) has made it clear on several occasions that F4F does not say anything.  The synonym reported on F4F is from another source and Jon does not attempt to verify or correct these.

Here are some photos of my Black Provence from RW, a small but tasty fig. It is sweet, figgy with a bit of fruitiness.

The fig from the outside looks just like black Ischia. Thanks for sharing. 

Daniel, Black Ischia is what it was sold as by Richard Watts, but he got it labeled as Black Provence. I wonder if the figs will be bigger next year, this is the first year figs, and first year in the ground.
