Luke, yes this is it's first summer planted in ground. It will be protected very well for winter. I can't give you an honest answer on how it holds up to the rain since this is the first year it had figs and this summer has been so dry. When the figs started to change color and ripen it was fairly dry with only a few showers. Maybe next year things will be different.
Mike, If your figs are mahogany red you may have the same fig. St Jerome looks to be more bluish in color. It's hard to say, if you could do a side by side comparison then you'd know for sure.
