Black Tuscan 2014

This is the first season for this fig. I am waiting for it to ripen so that I can take more photos. I just did not want to miss the opportunity to get pics now before anything happens to it. Just curious if anyone else is growing Black Tuscan and if it looks anything like this fig. Mine came from a reliable source. The majority of the leaves are mostly one lobe like this one.

Leon, That is an interesting looking variety. I like the shape of the leaf and the fig. Is it a good grower?
Looking forward to seeing a ripe fig.

It produces a very nice color fig like in the pic but a little late for my zone. Would
do well in zone with less rain. My tree is from Jon and majority of the leaves are similar
to those in the picture.

Art, thank you. Once this fig ripens I will take photos of it.

Paully, I thank you for adding those comments regarding the color and leaf shape in helping me identify the variety. This particular fig is about the size of a celeste fig at this point. I will compare to a quarter once it ripens more. What was your impression on the taste of Black Tuscan? Is it similar to anything other fig you know?

Leon, I wish I could help but I lost my tree this past winter
before it ever fruited. Would like to hear more about it when
you get to taste it.

beautiful color

Leon,
Great looking fig and leaf.Looking forward for more fig pics.
Phil from Ohio

@Leon -- the ripening timing in COOLER Oct is not the best time for figs to ripen. Comparing
its taste with RdB, HC, Dark Portuguese and Ginoso ripening within the same time frame, Blk Tuscan
comes last. Black Tuscan definitely needs plentiful heat and drier weather. I am keeping my
tree for now to ensure some friends have this variant before I send it to a new home. I would
look forward to your evaluation on its taste.

Beautiful leaves Leon, can't wait to see the interior of the ripe fruit.
3 Zidis that I am growing have similar shape leaves but very light green ... I don't know if it will change as it matures..

Paully, Ill let you know the taste.

Aaron, you are fortunate you can grow Zidi in your area!

By drier weather do you mean less rain or less humidity, or is that one in the same for figs? I was just wondering. We don't get a lot of rain but our humidity is awful in central Texas :(

Has to be one of the best tasting figs. Rich, lingering berry/wine flavor that stays on the palate. I need to see photos from other collectors but this fig and the shape of its leaves reminds me so much of Black Madeira and Preto except it is lighter and more purple in color.
I am excited to see how it does next season. There are a few more figs on this tree and I will take more photos as they ripen. I'm hoping that someone else who has this fig will post photos of their Black Tuscan to compare to mine.

Wow! What a beauty. Thanks for the update.

Hi leon,
I have two little tree that sprouted root this year. It was very special at that time because I knew I will not get any other cuttings. Now after seeing your fig, can't wait to taste the fig in my tree. Thanks for posting the pictures.

truly amazing... looks impressive inside out!
How is the tree's growth habit Leon, Bushy, Medium, Tall... aggressive or slow grower?

@ Leon - Thanks for posting the taste results. Looks like I will keep the tree and try to get my plant to
wake up earlier in the green house. I guess I can use it to get some good trades.

Hi Leon_edmond,
Do you have a "col de dame noire" to compare ?

thanks for sharing Leon, this is another beautiful fig, How well does this variety grow compared to black madeira and figo preto? Do you think it is anymore vigorous?

Paully, Does your BT look like mine?

Leon, very nice. Thanks for sharing pics and taste profile.

Hi Leon, another great looking fig from your collection.

Do you have I-258? It's supposed to be very similar to Black Madeira and Preto except ripens a bit earlier and I think I remember Herman saying the fruits are a little bigger( but I could be wrong here). Just wondering if maybe Tuscan Black and Italian 258 could possibly be the same fig.

I have a couple small Black Madeira and an even smaller I-258(which was the slowest cutting ever and is finally starting active growth after initiating rooting 9 months ago!),  hopefully they will make at least one fig each next summer.  I'll have to keep them in the sun room all winter for sure to have any chance.

Very nice, and it sure does resemble black madeira

@ Leon -- Yes your tree looks like mine.
