Black Velvet Potting soil

Good day, this past weekend, I was out at my local farm supply store buying some special dog food for my dog, Blue.  I noticed some potting soil called Black Velvet Potting soil.  I know a good bit of it is cow manure but was wondering if anyone ever used this stuff for their fig trees?  It's only $4 bucks for one cubic which is cheaper than MG at Walmart at $10.50 for 2cu.  I know MG has fertilizer in it but I like to add my own fertilizer to my mix so, this stuff might workout great depening on what I hear from folks here.

I've got 3 Desert Kings, 3 LSU Blacks, 2 Panaches, and one 8' tall Texas Everbearing that I need to repot and I'm thinking about trying this stuff in my fig mix recipe.  I'm using Bill's method for self watering pots.  So far, I got 10 pots ready to go.  I just got to make the dirt and the drain hole and I will be ready to roll.  Thanks in advance.  Cheers!

Hello Dennis, I think this would be a great time to experiment with different soil mix's when you have 3 fig trees the same. As long as the conditions stay the same, meaning they get equal sun and water. Maybe one all of this Black Velvet, another one with your regular mix and one with a mixture of both. I would do this with the same tree, because there growth habit should be the same, SHOULD. Good luck however way you go, keep us posted.

Dennis,
When you have a moment, please post some photos of your pots? I would like to see your variation of Bill's pots.

Good idea Luke!  I will do that.  I will use BV in one pot, Fafard 3B in another, and my own mix in another, but they will all be in the same size pot.   I'm glad I posted this question!  Fo the other trees, I will have 3 different pot sizes.  They are 30 gal, 25 gal and 27 gal.  The base diameter where my lathe will go is 15in, 13in and 14in respectively for each pot.  Why am I doing this?  I'm spending too much time moving trees to flat surfaces to make sure all the roots are watered thoroughly.  I've got an irrigation system built and it works well but I changed some of  my pots to self watering.  My trees look so much better being watered from the bottom.  I bought some pots from Walmart and some I'm converting to SWP.  Some of my trees are so root bound that I'm spending a lot of time getting water to those roots.  This is only happening on a few of my older trees but still as we get older, time is a very important thing!  So, I've decided to jump in and start repotting those that I know won't produce anymore figs like Desert King and a few others.  Some, are in tiny 10 gallon pots and I have to water them 2 and 3 times a day.  These trees are full of figs adn I don't want to loose them.  They have to be repotted up now!

I'm getting ready to travel out of town next week and I don't want to impose on my son to come over and water my trees.  But with 104 temperatures, I'll take what I can get!  So, I got to do something.  I called Bill and talked to him about his method.  Bill said he sets his pH at 7.8 or 7.9.  I said wow!   In another post, I asked forum members what pH did they set their trees at.  I did not get much of a response.  I found that to be interesting.  I was surprised to hear that a few forum friends don't test the pH of their figs!  Go Figure!  I do and all I can say is my figs are around 7.  I had one Kadota years ago that I got from a nursery in Vegas.  The pH of that tree was 6.5.  It was the healthiest of my trees.  That was 2 years ago.  I lost that tree to a hard freeze that same winter.  But the figs on that tree were amazing!

JD, I'll post some pics this evening of my pots, tools used and all.  Bill said his pots are 3/4in thick plastic pots.  I would like to have some of his pots but $75 bucks for one pot is too expensive for me.  Most of my pots come from Big Lots.  I only paid $7.50 ea for these pots and they are 25g.  They come with 4 holes in them, but I seal them up using a penny, super glue and Zip Kicker spray.  For Father's Day, my son got me a gift card from Lowes.  I used it to buy 5 of their largest and lightest pots.  This Fall I will be testing my own soil recipe for a 30 gallon hypertufa pot.  I would like to use th

Dennis,

The funny thing is during the exact time you posted this thread Dan ( dan_the celt ) and I were texting each other about soil mixes.

I use LC1 which I think it is Fafard item along with Fafard 52 mix ( drain really well ) and Fertilome UPM.

Not to throw your project off but I see the UPM stay moist way longer than the others, which I think this might be a plus to us all during this heatwave.

Any chance you can get your hands on a bag of UPM and try this at your place too?

Rafed, UPM is dynamite!  I had some years ago and totally loved it!  Nobody on the East coast carries it!  I got lucky 3 years ago and found a brand new website selling it for $16 a bag with only $7 dollars shipping!  I bought $3 bags before the company found the error and took the product off their site.  I'll look again for it and keep you posted.

I haven't tried Black Velvet soil but I have looked at the Black Kow manure.  I never realized Kow's ate so much sand.

Here you go JD, as requested.  These pots are pretty big.  The new light brown one came from Lowes on left.  I only got 6 of these.  The good news about them is there are no holes in them.  These pots are 21.5 in diameter and 17.5in deep.  The clean gray one on the right came from Big Lots.  I had to seal the holes using pennie, super glue and Zip Kicker spray.  These pots are 21.5 in diameter wide and 16.5 in deep.  The last pot came from Walmart.  Its 20 in diameter wide and 17.5 in deep.  The single yellow pot is the largest self water pot at Wal mart.  It's 16in in diameter and only 13in deep.  But they work very well.  Take a look at my LSU Black.  I will be putting one of these in my home made swps.  Enjoy!

I wrote Fertilome asking for a source that carried their soil mixes in my area.  Everyone I call carries Fertilome products EXCEPT the soils.  However, I did find another soil mix called BACCTO Professional Grower's mix.  I found it at a mom and pop hardware store for $9.56 per 50lb bag.  I may give this stuff a try.  Anyone using this product?

Hey Rafed!  Guess what I found?  A source that carries UPM!!!!!!  I bought 6 bags today and plan on getting more next weekend.  I will be trying it on my SWPs today along with BACCTO and Black Velvet.

Dennis,

That's great! How big are the bags and how much?

My uncle has a small ma and pa garden center in Detroit and he supplied me with the UPM last year. Somehow his son did not order it this year.
I showed my uncle the difference between the UPM and other mixes like Fafard 52 mix. The UPM was still moist compared to all other mixes. Well worth the money and should pay off with the watering in the long run.

Glad you found it and if I'm ever in your area we should meet up and grab a pallet or two of this stuff to take home. LOL

The bags are 50 dry qts aka a tad over 2 cu.  They only cost $9.50 a bag!  I am just tickled pink!  I told the shop to get ready because I will be getting a whole pallet this Fall.

Well, the results are in!  UPS is NOT a good medium for SIP!  Whatever you do, do not use it for SIPs.  The best medium for SIPs is compost!  Period.  For those coming to my fig fest in August, I will have 2 bags of UPM for sale.  Black velvet works fine though.

Dennis - what result made you say to not use UPM for SIPs?  Failure to wick, failure of the plants to grow, rotten roots?

Ed, it gets too airy on a hot day and the tree grows slower. It wicks good but each of the trees I grew in it did not do well. And ants love it and created long air pockets throughtout the root ball.

Hello Denis,I up potted a few figs from  20 oz. cups to  one gallon contains with pure Black Velvet and they did very well, better than just plain potting soil...........

After years of testing it against others, Black Velvet is a great potting soil.  I would use it over any other potting soil except mushroom compost.  The only major difference is it cost more than my local mushroom composting farm.  The company that makes it changed the name to Black Gold but I agree Brain, it is an excellent potting soil.

I will have to look for something similar locally - the Black Kow website says their products like the Black Velvet soil are only sold in the south.
