Blizzard figs in FL

OK so not what most of you would call a blizzard but I can't recall having these kinds of temps sustained for this long, about  2 weeks now. They are calling for another freeze warning tonight and at least 4-5 more cold nights b-4 it warms up again. After almost 30 yrs here my body and wardrobe are no longer ready for this. Veggie garden is shot with the exception of collards, lots of fried green tomatoes planed for next weeks menu. I picked 6 figs yesterday and these today as I didn't want to leave for chance, only 3 blks were any good or ripe the others, well lets just say better than nothing. The cut one bottom center of course was the best.

Better take cover in a warm place.
It is balmy -13C (8F) here and it is difficult to pass through the neigbourhood streets without honking at the kids to remove the hockey nets from the middle of the road to let the car pass through.

That bad thing about Florida when the weather is this cold is that it ruins all your plans for the garden.    We don't usually get a freeze until late January or early February.   Since my tomatoes usually in the height of production when they freeze I decided to outsmart nature this year and planted early.  The plants were all loaded and just really producing.  They are all now dead despite my covering them.  I too have a bucket of green tomatoes to do something with.  Most of my plants were cherry and currant tomatoes and they just weren't worth trying to pick.

Most of my remaining figs fell off the plants last week although the plant up against the house still has some ripening.  The one I picked on Wednesday was cold enough to have come from the fridge but had a good flavor (brown turkey).

I have the Christmas lights on the mango and avocado trees in hopes of keeping them alive.  It is an odd look in the back yard to see glowing quilts in the middle of the yard.  The dog has spent a good part of the evening in the yard barking at them.

24 degrees out at 11:00 p.m.    This is not good.

What is the critical temperature for young figs?  Does anyone have any idea how much warmer a shed will stay?  (wood frame with wood siding and no insulation and concrete slab).  I'm hoping they stay warm enough to not suffer damage.

Oh Sal just as i was thinking someday Florida as a permanent home and you mention this type of cold? The misses just mentioned today somwhere around Orlando area but my wife can change her mind like chicago weather.
That one fig looks nice by the way.

Ottawan you brought back many memories of street hockey as we used to do that on our block as kids growing up along with football in winter time  and the cars would of course beep therer horns.
Go Chicago Blackhawks my favorite team and sport .

Lisa even though I'm a few * warmer then you the figs in the shed should be fine. I have 7mo old trees that I left out and they are OK This should be it  for this front
