Blue Bingo

Here is an heirloom fig that I discovered a few years ago. These figs are very good and do well in my area. It is possibly of French orgin. This fig will produce a nice crop of figs from new growth that comes up from the roots. It is definitely not a Celeste.

Do you have any feeling of this one's cold tolerance?
Fruiting from the roots sounds good for the north.

I do not yet know much about its cold tolerance. Last year I left too many figs on the tree going into the fall.......and the tree was top killed. It came back real nice from the roots with figs on the new growth. I will post pictures in this thread when the figs ripen. The old man who had the mother tree told me that these figs are sometimes blue.....and the reason for my giving it its Blue Bingo name. So far I have not seen that color on my tree. These figs taste pretty much like a regular Celeste.....which it is not. I don't recall this variety ever dropping any figs. The old man didn't either. I will watch closely again for any fig drop as the current crop matures. If it always holds onto its figs.....that is a plus too.  This might be a good substitute fig for a regular Celeste. Most people could not tell any difference. The mother tree displayed a definite dwarfing tendency.....that too is a BIG plus especially for container growing. So far I'm really liking what I see about this Louisiana heirloom fig.

I am getting ever closer to declaring this a winner fig. Time will tell......

Dan These figs do not have the long neck Celeste has.
So yes it is different tho it taste like Celeste and is the same size.
The shape of the ripe fruits is different if Celeste fruits will be next to them.

Ha ha....I should have said most people "in my area" would not know that this heiroom fig is not a Celese. One cannot fool your sharp eyes H2. Any idea what variety this one might be? I will post pictures of my Blue Bingo tree later. Right now, it likely has a different leaf pattern than the one shown since it grew back from the ground very rapidly.

I think it is a sport of Celeste that evolved trough selection by people in your area where even Celeste can sour when heavy rain last too long coupled with high humidity and high temperature.
This people selection,is what ,makes certain cultivars disappear, due to problems (Ex :Brunswick),and better strain (like White Triana(closed eye Brunswick like),establish and live forever.
It is called Progress
