Blue fig orange fig?

Is there any fig variety in blue color like blueberry and in orange color?

Hi Jimmy,

I believe you may find several with bluish skin, close to the blueberries as well as of various tonalities of yellow same as diff cultivars of citrus...

Francisco, Which variety is in the photo? looks delicious. I think a lot people may call it "black".  the "blue" color looks outside the skin. Is it yeast or tiny hair?

Jimmy thats blue you see is called the "bloom" that develops on the skin.

Jimmy,

Martin brought the answer..it's the bloom which may or may not be enhanced by the predominant wave lengths of the available light when the picture was taken.. Ideally in summer near  sunset at northern latitudes....the fig skin hairs will also play a role in this with its crossed reflexions.

the most difficult exercise is to bring 'green bloom' to the picture and apparently this can only be done in the southern hemisphere at lower latitudes.

Let me give you another one  which is slightly different, may be a deeper blue skin perception.

As regards to names I am a bit scared to pass them to you as my figs are 'ficus non grata' in America!!
with their name on hand 'echelon' may grab the poor fruit and...

Well, as you are a friend, I will tell you,..the big one is known by 'donkey's balls' .. if they grab, that's their problem!
The smaller fruit is a popular and inoffensive black Smyrna, one of the very best to my palate.

Francisco,

I am thankful for the names (regardless of how offensive they might sound). We already have problems with multiple names for the same variety.  Adding to the confusion because we do not like a name doesn't sit well with me.  Where does it stop?

James,

You are right.. ' Where does it stop? '

Francisco

James i do not see it ever stopping.

San Giovanni is orange in color with orange flesh. Hopefully it stays warm enough for mine to ripen.

Never heard San Giovanni, so where can I get this one?

Orange is my favorite color. Rafed can you tell us some info on San Giovanni.
Where it's from?
Cold hardiness?
Early or late?

Why it's not at my place???

San Giovanni is on my wish list now. Still looking for blue fig, here is color code example http://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm. Cobalt blue is my favorite color.

I'm interested in that San Giovanni too.. :)

Tony

The little info I had crashed with the laptop. I have tasted it once at Adrianos. Not much taste but maybe due to having other figs at the time.

I will post pictures later when I get home. If Jimmy doesn't mind me posting them on his thread.

Rafed,
I'd like to see the pics. I want to have the full spectrum of fig.

Jimmy,

I went ahead and started its' own thread. That way I will make updates on it.

Dave, Thanks. Although I don't see this is close to my favorite blue color, I do find the orange fig - MADELEINE DE SAIGON on the same page.
