Search:  "Ficus carica bonsai images"....and you will see what can be done.  Also, previous threads on this forum and on the Garden Web Fig Forum will yield some more results.

I would definitely protect any bonsai-fig from the cold weather, and frost damages.

EDIT:   Most photos showing thick, short trunks, are the result of a heavily pruning back the main stems and branches, and then re-growing a new rack of branches to complete the "look" of an ancient tree.  Beware...leaves will be, and stay large, and out of scale with the rest of the plant.  Most photos show small leaves because they take pictures of the plant as leaves are developing, and not yet at full size.  Ficus carica generally do not make good bonsai because the leaves usually stay too large.

Here's some good info:

Interesting, the leaves stay big even if you snip the leaf tips early in their growth?  That usually does a nice job of encouraging smaller foliage size, though I havent tried it on a fig.

I was hoping of doing my potted fig as a semi-bonsai/sculpted tree...both for looks and easy of fruit access.

Thanks for the theads
