bordeaux mixture

Well, we are just before the rainy season in Florida and with that it seems my figs get some leaf rust on them.  It doesnt get bad if I keep it in check with some copper sulfate.  So yesterday I mixed up a one gallon batch of a bordeaux mixture.

I took a gallon of water.

Set 1 large cup full out of that and mixed in 3 TBL spoons of lime.

I took the rest of the water and dissolved 6 1/2 tsp of copper sulfate.  I made sure it was entirely dissolved by swirling the mixture around for a few min.  If you see a few pieces of copper, keep swirling.

Then I took the mixture of lime, gave it a quick stir and combined the two into a gallon sprayer.  Shook it up and added a squirt of dish soap.

Im posting this cause its easy to find the recipe for 40-50 gallons of a bordeaux mixture but difficult to find a one gallon recipe.  You will also notice alot of places, if your searching, have coppied this recipe wrong and have made both measurements tsp or TBL.

Hope this comes in handy.

Search for ‘pickling lime’ for food grade lime, $2 on line

Search for ‘drain root killer’, make sure its copper sulfate.  You can find this at home depot and other stores for a few dollars.

NOTE: one measuremet is a Tablespoon, the other is a teaspoon.

Great to find a recipe for a small amount of this mix. Thank you.

I'm  curious about one thing however - Dormant application vs growth season application.

I see lots of references to using it as a late fall/winter treatment, but I notice you plan to apply it now - In Portugal, where I grew up, I seem to recall we sprayed it several times during the growing season, and certainly Portuguese people with vegi patches  right here in Canada, liberally apply the stuff to their Tomatoes and Potatoes during the growing season .....

Any thoughts?

Thanks to the very humid and hot condition we have been having just about every ornamental in my garden is loaded with mildew, so I had hoped to spray everything with Bordeaux mix.

You spray in the spring before you have any fruit.  It sits on the leafs and stems and branches.  Doesnt seem to be absorbed.  It kills all the surface fungus and seems to just slowly wash off in the rains.  I could tell my trees were sprayed for about a month.  All the fruit developed after I sprayed.
I say its not absorbed because if it was it would kill the plant by killing the roots.  (copper is also a root killer)
I will say, I used it this spring and never had a spec of rust this year and its been a busy rainy season, Id say about everyother day to three days with 1-5 inches a rain.
