Bought a Hardy Chicago from Lowe's today...(pics)

While getting some mulch at Lowe's today, I incidentally stumbled onto a fig/muscadine/berry section.  I had no idea Lowe's sold figs.  The only variety was Hardy Chicago.  I thought, for $10 why the heck not.  My current unknown fig could use a sibling.  :)
I counted 11 figs on this young tree.  Looks pretty healthy and firm.  Anyone have experience with Lowe's HC figs?  Should I go ahead and toss the figs or allow them to drop naturally?  I plan to put it in a larger pot next spring.

Looks legit.

Can't complain at that price!

Wow!  Congratulations!

Suzi

Congrats. Looks like a nice healthy fig tree. And $10 seems like a very good price. Earlier this year (before F4F) I was extremely happy to find a mission for $15 in a narrower container.

Frank,
I bought a couple Hardy Chicago fig trees this spring from Lowe's. I compared them to my original HC which I bought from another place years ago, which I can't remember, should of kept better records, anyway, the leaves and fruit from the Lowe's trees were identical to my original tree.

Thanks Tony.  Do you keep yours in the pot or did you plant in the ground?  I'm looking forward to tasting this variety in a year or two.

My original is potted. The new one is planted in ground and put on some pretty good growth. I'm trying some experimenting this year. I'm going to cover it and put it to bed and hope it's still alive with no branch die back this coming spring. If it fails I'll still have the potted one.

I wish my lowes had chicago hardy. I was just there today and they only had some Magnolia figs and poor looking brown turkey.

I have three of them, one was from last year and two from this year, all had figs. Can't beat price and comes with one year replacement.

Frank the Figgy:

North-East garden centers, nurseries, Home Depot...all sell a  multitude of choices every year...."Brown Turkey"...."Celeste"...."Kadota"!   Boring figs, boring choices....with a capital "B"!

I wish I could find a "Chicago Hardy" for $10.00.

Frank

Bought a few Hardy Chicago two years back from Lowes. They are healthy, productive and appear to be true to type. Great deal.       Angelo NY zone 7a

Great!  Thanks for all the comments!!

Frank,

Pm me in the fall. I have a very vigorous FMV-Free strain of HC that I can send you cuttings of.

My Chicago hardy are from Lowes as well, but a few years back, glad to hear folks think it is legit. I have had bad luck with mis-labeled muscadines from them. I think it matters who their supplier on the plants is.

Frank, on Long Island I've seen and also bought a Chicago H from Lowes. You might get the store manager or the person in charge of the gardening area to order some for the spring. Here they seem to be very accommodating . I paid $10 for mine too.

I have yet to see a fig at Lowe's in Colorado.  One of the better private owned garden centers had 10 fig trees this year and they were happy because they sold them all. Apparently next year their getting 15, they are very healthy(Monrovia). Spendy though.

The leaves do look like an HC fig.

Also:
Nice roots...
>>>  I plan to put it in a larger pot next spring.
But make sure to 'score' the roots, top-to-bottom,
(one or two sides) to cut the circling roots.
The tree will later thank you for preventing it from self girdling.

Here in central Florida our Lowes just carry Magnolia and brown Turkey.

Agree with the nice price comment.  I bought two figs at Southern States three weeks ago and they were $35 each (Black Spanish & Lattarula).  It's nice to see that interest is growing in figs with the general public.

Greetings and congrats on the good looking HC fig!

I too have only positive comments to make regarding a HC that we purchased last Spring from Lowes. Planted it against our house in a nook by the fireplace with plenty of sun exposure and it has really grown like gang busters.

The first year it grew nice branches, put off good shoots, and we picked about a dozen or so tasty small figs. This year has been amazing! I was keeping count of every fig harvested for the longest of time, but when we got over 75 and were still getting multiple picks, i lost count.

The tree i planted, in fact, was much smaller than yours, but is now pushing 10 - 12 feet. A few weeks back I even started two air layerings as a project.

So, bottom line, no complaints from this Lowes Fig Tree consumer. best of luck to you with your new addition!

That's amazing, Mark!  Your post has got me all pumped up for next year's growth.  I hope I can get the same results as you did.  Thanks for sharing.

It's nice to read that some of the "Big Box Stores" carried a fig variety that was worth someone's time and effort to grow.  Also nice to realize that if a first time fig grower buys this variety, that they will be growing one of the better, hardier, and tastier varieties, as opposed to the watery, insipid, far-to-common, "Brown Turkey".  Yech....what dreck!

Now, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for this fig variety.  I'm hoping that this variety will have mass distribution into garden centers.  But...then, maybe I'm hoping for nothing.  Honestly, I've seen the same crap plants and trees being sold year after year in most garden centers.

Frank...not the Figgy Frank...but, the Bronx-Frank  : ))

Wow , I am impressed !   not bad for $10.00   I go to the Lowes in Danbury Ct and Home depot also    does anyone know if they carry them ?    I just received a Hardy Chicago that I order from Hirts Garden  purchase thru  Amazon for $11.00  it looks healthy but, its so tiny ,  I mean the stem is 1 1/2 inches and two leaves , it will take two years to get as big as yours

I bought a couple of them from Lowe's this spring. They put on alot of growth. They started putting out figs a few weeks ago.  Hope to eat some next year.
