Anyone growing or has grown Bournabat?  Any comparison to English Brown Turkey?

Bournabat is Smyrna type and will not ripen without wasp assistance.
It is an excellent fruit, quite large and very flavored.

Yes, like Francisco said, it needs the wasp.
I have it and like it a lot.

Wasp??

Texas A&M recommends this fig for Texas, as for as I know there are no fig wasps here.  There is a link somewhere to the A&M site that discusses this fig, I will have to find it.

Hi dkirtexas,
Here they sell "Ice Crystal", that is a smyrna too ... So almost no figs without the wasp ... And what? If the customer buys ... they won't prevent the customer from buying.
Of course, they say that IC is more for its leaves and that it will make very few figs... I wished they were honest and called a cow a cow.
And if the customer wants a cow ...
By the way, I have 2 brebas on my IC ... let's see if I get one at least ...

Thanks,
JD - Did not know about the IC
Sid - I read the posts from Steve, saw them when I searched.

The breba may not need the wasp, like Desert King. Just a guess.

DK is a different type (SanPedro) - with two well defined crops, a parthenocarpic breba and a main crop requiring pollination in June

Smyrna figs are 'caducous' - one crop only (main) with mandatory pollination to fully mature

As a matter of fact some Smyrna figs, in the Med and/or Med like regions do show an intriguing breba crop with quite large fruit, which will never ripen.
Here we call these figs .. 'false brebas' - as we speak they are already shrinking and  drying up and falling from the tree. To mature they also need pollination.. but  the first wasps with pollen still need at least an extra month to show up.

How interesting.
What a complex structure of a symbiotic relationship between wasps and figs.

Start collecting caprifigs then have someone send you some wasp laden figs.  There's no reason you can't have a wasp colony there even if they need a little protection now and then.  I'll be happy to send you some bournabat cuttings in the fall.
