Bowl full of Celeste?

Last summer, I sent 6 letters to people that I had seen fig trees in their yard.  I had 3 responses.  One of those I got cuttings from (best guess is LSU Gold) and shared with some other members.

Another one, I nice lady just around the block from me, had contacted me back in the winter that they were going to prune their tree, which I guess never happened.  But she called me yesterday and said they had extra figs if I wanted to come by and pick them.

So I loaded up the family and we went to pick figs.  I also brought her one of the trees mentioned above.

Here's the 5 lbs of figs we picked.  Time to make jelly!!

These look like Celeste to me.  They are small and look a lot like the Celeste pics in my other recent post.

The purplish one at the lower right looks most like my Celestes, but understand the others are akin to what they loo like in the south and east.

Its time to make fig preserves.......... celeste.jpg

There were several dark purple ones like that. Maybe just a little more ripe? Or more sun?

They look like Celeste to me.  The ones shaded by leaves are lighter colored when ripe.

Wow what a sight!  How nice of that lady to share.

Congrat's James on being able to pick all those figs!  I don't have Celeste but they sure do look a lot like other photos of Celeste I've seen.  Photos of the leaves would probably confirm it. Great photo of your wife and daughter too - your daughter looks like she appreciates a good fig!

What a haul, tasty preserves.

nice bowl of figs!!  My Celeste figs usually crack a little.  Right now, Hardy Chicago and Florea figs are ripening in my area.

After I was back home and about to take the picture, I realized I never thought to take a leaf.  She said she would give me a call if there more ripen than she is able handle.  So I might be able to get a leaf in a couple of weeks.

Tonight, I'll be making FIGJAM!!!!

gotta go buy a canner.. lol

PS.  Been snaking on figs all day today.  Can hardly wait for my own figs to ripen.  They'll probably all ripen when I'm on vacation in Canada next month.

Good luck with the canning.  These are off my 2- 10 year old Celeste trees.  I have been picking this much daily since July 4th.

Found some Purplish Celeste in my neighborhood. Its new to me, very delicious. Will post pics in a few days. Celeste for me is #! in my book.   Thanks Guys for sharing these pics.

Well, I've decided that if I leave Connecticut I'm moving to either Texas, Louisiana, or California.

Come on............we got lots of room in Texas

Ruuting, I think you will appreciate the winters and the fig growing.

The Fig Jam turned out perfect!!!

Looks good.

Congratulations!

Wow...... wish that was my bowl of figs, they look delectable.    Thanks for the photos..

Interesting.. first batch of jam I used 5 cups of sliced figs and got 6 jars of jelly.  The second batch, I only have 4 cups of sliced figs but still got 6 jars of jelly out of it.  The second batch turned out just a little lighter in color too and seemed to thicken a little more.

Anyway.. while slicing the figs, I came across this mutant triplet.  3 figs from one stem.  All three had pulp inside.  The lighting was bad for the picture.

James, Brian and Chapman,
Excellent harvest from your trees. How old are each of your trees? Can you post photos of the trees? Keep preserving, stewing, and canning...

JD, I will get back with some pictures of my trees.

These are 2 Celeste trees I started from my original tree. These are at my brother's home and are 15 years old.  The 2 trees were planted 15 feet apart  and are pretty much grown together.  They haven't been pruned much except for the tip cuttings I have made. RC fig tree.jpg  RC fig tree.jpg  This is one of my 2- 10 year old Celeste after the ice last winter.  I will try to post more pics tomorrow.

This is the same tree now.

This is my other Heirloom Celeste, also 10 years old.

Hey Chapman, beautiful trees! Can you tell much difference between the two varieties of Celeste you have?
